Liverpool have denied reports that club lawyers are set to meet with Suarez's legal representatives in Barcelona today."

No one denies FIFA can give Suarez any punishment they deem fit. What is being questioned is using that power to make the ban to cross competition barriers, an innocent and uninvolved party that had no control over the situation being so deeply negatively affected by a decision arrived at in their absence and without a chance to put forward a case in their favour. I would get it if there was only one competition in the world but why not just give him a very lengthy international ban and punish people who were directly responsible for whatever happened? Much easier to do because everyone would be happy if the international ban is long enough.

Red,

He has now done this at Club and International level....in fact twice at club level. This may well be the reaseon for the domestic ban, he didn't learn from his first nibble. His international ban sits between the two previous domestic ban lengths

ROTFLMAO!!

If Liverpool and their fans think they can make a legal case about this, they had better be aware that there are many clubs that would sue the ass off Liverpool if they won this case, as those clubs were prevented from competing in Europe for five years by the actions of Liverpool fans at Heysel.

Dearie me, the hypocrisy of it!!!!

Worst post I've seen here recently and that takes some doing. Not only is this repulsive but also stupid and poorly reasoned out. You must be an idiot. When you typed this you were probably thinking what a strong point you were making. Repulsed by Suarez behaviour but coming out with this? You are easily worse than him.

First off how would Liverpool Football Club be sued for something that you seem to blame Liverpool fans for? Are clubs responsible for all the actions of their fans? If so ban all the Italian and Spanish clubs who have had their fans chant racist taunts at black players.

Furthermore, though Heysel was a terrible disaster it was really an accumulation of poor behaviour by England fans over a sustained period of time that finally brought the ban. Heysel, though spectacularly was the straw that finally broke the camel's back.

I love how all the paragons of virtue on our board seem to be quite choosy in what they criticise.

Who makes you sheriff, the comment on the european ban was out of order to be fair. So just ignore it. Italian and spanish clubs have been punished for racist chants, but very not to any real degree from UEFA and that should also change.

red mamba

quite a few people were denying it further up this thread and in many other threads across the footie forums. but they are wrong because as you say, FIFA can give a ban from all football related activity. in the same way that other sporting bodies, ICC for example, can give worldwide bans where the offence is serious enough.

in this case, the seriousness is not the bite itself. if this had been a first offence, of a player with a generally good disciplinary record, I suspect it would have been a 4-6 match ban from international football and that would be it. but this was suarez, it was his third offence for what is a pretty inexcusable action in the first place, he has other disciplinary issues on his record and he has shown a complete and utter lack of remorse. I really don't think his dismissive press statements and the lies he has told immediately after the fact have helped although tbf he was on for a hefty punishment as soon as he did it, on camera, in front of probably 50million plus witnesses.

I understand some people saying this is unfair on Liverpool but ultimately for a sanction to have any effect it has to escalate and what more could FIFA do? the guy has done the same thing just over a year ago, had a ten match ban and not learned his lesson. this will hit him financially, as Liverpool will have something in place in contract which means they won't be paying his wages for the period. as for the effect on Liverpool's team, I guess if as a club you buy and stick with players like suarez (and the same goes for anyone who has barton in their squad or diouf or any other player with bad disciplinary records) then you have to face losing them regularly. if clubs didn't fall over themselves to sign these players for stupid wages, perhaps they would get their act together and behave better.

That is the natural risk of an employer and why they have insurance. It happens all the time where the impact of actions of an individual employee has a massive negative impact on an employer . It is totally unrealistic to suggest that an individual should receive a less severe punishment than he or she deserves just because of the needs of the employer.

I did not say I was Sheriff. Where did that come from? Do you see me as the sheriff? If a Liverpool fan said something so warped you'd be falling over yourself. Now you are asking me to 'just ignore it'? You know its true.

Now as you never made reference to the silly comment on European football I could only assume that you were commenting on the whole Suarez affair.

I did however agree that the European football ban comment was out of order I even ignored the idiot
