I'm new to the FIFA UT (always been a PES player) but bought it for the kids. After 1 go on the UT though I was hooked, I want the superstar squad.
My question is about buying the gold player packs or buying players from the transfer market. I bought 2 packs (one was for completing the manager tasks) last night & had Alexi Sanchez in one & Welbeck in the other. Is this just beginners luck or is it quite common to get good players from the packs?
I don't really want to go down the route of buying coins, although it is quite tempting considering they are pretty cheap on eBay.

Also, the best players aren't a sure way to win. I have a silver team with Portuguese league players, Bebe, Kelvin etc and I am in Division 3 online. I have a gold team with a front 3 of ribery, Benzema and Bale and it I probably have similar win ratios with both teams.

Who, me or Sanchez
It is tempting to buy them, I'm only playing offline at the moment getting used to the game. I'd probably get hammered every game online.

Everyone else is getting used to it too though, in UT every team you will play is shít at the mo so it's quite good getting used to playing it against real people.

On the subject of packs - don't bother. You don't need to buy coins either. People that sell coins make them in the game to sell, so just aspire to do what they do. Get to know the market, pick a "product", bulk buy any that are going for less than "market value" and sell for profit. I finished 14 with 1.5m coins and an amazing team, without spending a penny of real money.

They've introduced loan players this time, you can get some decent players when starting out, I had Sterling for 15 games and Milito for 12 games. They carried me allowing me to win more coins.
I've got a average team to be fair, with most players in the 77-80 region. Relying on the pace of my wingers and forwards
I only play online, against other UT and some of the teams are frightening!!

I've just managed to get a gold team, 75-77 rated. You need this basis to move forward and then once you can start making some good sales, buying the better players. It seems like a slog at first because you have to start from scratch, but it's good fun getting there.

As far as I understand it, the way the match maker works is by pairing you with someone with:
A similar (maybe not the same) division
Similar win/loss ratio
Similar team rating
Similar chemistry
So you shouldn't, with your starter bronze team, get drawn against someone who bought coins and has an 85 rated team.

I'd never spend 'real' money on it, tbh I don't understand why there are people that do

Same. Guessing you trade then dude? It's really tough on 15 at the mo, as the market is in such early days it's difficult to get a foothold... also it's really weird going from being able to buy contracts, team fitness or whatever I wantto having to win a match in order to buy stuff!

I don't have a set formula to be fair.
I tend to get a nucleus of a squad, use the contract renewals, use the loan system and try and use the transfer market as best I can and occasionally buy the Gold packs.

The people who sell the coins online. Where do they get the coins from?
And what do you mean by working the market?

They make the coins in the game itself, which is why EA can't stop it.
Basically they buy lots of players and sell them for profit. Not rocket science, but without sufficient budget to start with (buying packs so you have capital to start trading) it is difficult to make hundreds of millions.
If you find a player or two that you "get to know", then you can identify when one is being sold too cheap - in this case buy it and sell for its actual value.
It took me a few months to learn but by the end of Fifa 14 my trading profit was 3.2m and I had a team of TOTW/TOTS/MOTM cards.
