Is now the time?

Can England beat the Aussies, guarantee themselves a place in the 4N final while pushing the champs out of the tournament?

This is the weakest aussie squad I have ever seen. And, in theory, it is one of the strongest England squads for a long time. Still, when you look at the lineups there are not many individual positions where you would give the English player the benefit.

2 issues then: can England hold on to the ball for long enough to make pressure count? Do the Aussies take the 4N seriously? If the first answer is YES then I think we stand a chance, if the second answer is NO then I think we stand a chance. History, though, suggests disappointment.

If England play smart football they will win.
If they play dumb football like they did against Samoa they will lose by a huge score.

If they had Sam Burgess then yes.

It will be tough. Aussies are not as strong as last year's World Cup so England will have a good chance.

Ho hum. I haven't seen the game but next time, press harder Ryan Hall.

At first I was gutted when I saw the score but then I thought...you lose Billy Slater & Jarrod Hayne - you turn to Greg Inglis. You lose J Thurston, you turn to Cherry Evans. You lose Paul Gallen, you still have Sam Thaiday and Greg Bird to lead the pack. Not exactly a disaster is it.

At least we were competitive. Can we maintain the rage for the Kiwis?

Would the VR had given the try if the Aussie's were in the same position as England?
Why did the Aussies insist on their own ref?

BF: I haven't watched the NRL for over a year but there was a big push in 2013 to go with the refs original decision. That is, unless there is a compelling reason to overturn the decision then it stands. In this case that would be clear evidence of downward pressure. There have also been comments on the fact that Ryan Hall trotted back to the 20m for a line dropout. Not exactly dripping with confidence.

I was a bit surprised though about the refs. I think we give in every time to the Aussies. It is a problem though with only 2 professional competitions in the world. Getting someone independent of NRL/Superleague is impossible. Why we had to have an Aussie ref and VR is questionable. Also the Aussies are used to reffing in pairs so being the lone operator must be a challenge. And it looks like the Kiwis has another NRL ref - Kiwi Henry Perenara. So Phil Bentham sits behind those 2 in the pecking order! And I don't think Gerald Sutton is even top Aussie ref.

Amazing Finale in the 4 Nations Tournament.

Kiwis are worthy winners & the Final was a great advert for Rugby League

England so close yet so far. If only Big Slamming Sam was available, England would have won at least 2 of those 3 matches.
