Rank our numbers 7's

In our history as a club, we've always been fortunate to have a top class number 7's but how would you rank them?

Very difficult thing to do and no matter what you're gonna be wrong but hey ho let's give it a go.

The candidates:

Captain Marvel, Bryan Robson.

El Beatle, Georgie Best.

Le King, Eric Cantona.

Le Shiyte, Antonio Valencia.

Poster Boy, David Beckham.

The King of the step over, Cristiano Ronaldo.

It's an almost impossible task but I'd go with.

5. Bryan Robson
4. David Beckham
3. George Best
2. Ronaldo
1. Eric Cantona

Who knows, maybe our new number 7 could get into that list one day.

The question for you though, VC, as one of the few people on this board who can remember watching Best, is what number did he wear when he gave you most joy?

George Best was most commonly number 11, not number 7, so perhaps he is the best number 11 we've ever had?

Conor

Bestie did play in 11 a bit more but he still wore the 7 too (and the 8)

They weren't squad numbers back then but positional numbers

Bestie did wear the number 7 on many occassions so can rightly be included
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's my point though Macca, squad numbers didn't exist. Best only wore whatever number correlated to his position. As he played most of his games from the left wing, he mostly wore number 11. It may be a minor point, but whenever I hear people talking about "the great no.7 shirt" I always think the inclusion of George Best is meaningless.

He wasn't given no.7 as part of the great tradition of the shirt. Nor did he start the great tradition. He merely wore it occasionally when played on the right wing. Why is that he appears to be synonymous with the no.7 shirt when in fact he mostly wore no.11?

I know this is coming across as overly pedantic, but you know I'm right.

Di Maria won't make the list for sheet.
The guy is too inconsistent to be on the list and has been like that all his career.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're a broken record.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
just stating the truth
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The thread has nothing to so with Di Maria

Bringing him up, again, and again, just makes you look obsessive
----------------------------------------------------------------------
like you with rooney?

also, is di maria not a number 7 and did the OP not ask a question directly about di maria, i think he did.

I dont bang on about Rooney on threads that arnt about him and my rooney defence is almost always reactionary to a stupid comment someone else has made

If you're gonna ask the question then surely you should have a more complete list of players! What about Billy Meredith and Steve Coppell?

it was an additional comment to what the thread is about

Why not comment on the thread topic instead of going on about Di Maria after a couple of poorish games despite being so far, our outfield player of the season

Conor

from what I have read in the past, I don't think there was alot in it when it comes to the number of times he wore 7 and 11 albeit I have read he did wear the 11 more

Coppell was one of my favourite United players growing up

he played in 206 consecutive league games for us

tbf though, as good as he was, he wouldn't make the top 5 number 7s we have had

it just bores me to see people over rating di maria on every other thread (not this one) so i turn on the record myself.

anyway my opinion:
1. Beckham
2. Cantona
3. Robson
4. Ronaldo
5. Owen for that goal

Even though Best was a #11, he simply was THE best, can you imagine him playing in this era, with the gear available, pitches, boots, balls, conditioning (as well as drug/alcohol intervention). OFF THE CHARTS! Plus, he was cooler than James Bond, Mr.T, AND Bo Diddly combined.
