Why do we enjoy wrestling?

The French philosopher and semiotician Roland Barthes wrote in his 1957 book, Mythologies: “Wrestling holds the power of transmutation which is common to the Spectacle and to Religious Worship. In the ring, and even in the depths of their voluntary ignominy, wrestlers remain gods because they are, for a few moments, the key which opens Nature, the pure gesture which separates Good from Evil, and unveils the form of a Justice which is at last intelligible."

So, there you go.

Forza what you do in your spare time is your business. Be it the oiled up men you mentioned (obviously not the cartoonish family friendly wrestling this thread's about as oily skin would make that impossible) or 22 men in shorts getting hot and sweaty on a pitch then hugging when they score.

It's funny how wrestling fans see the theatre of it, but certain men can't see past the wrestlers themselves. How is it in that closet?
