Women's Football

Certain sections of the media are really trying to push the exposure on Women's football. It feels a little like been force fed something simply to be seen to be covering the bases

Is anyone actually interested in Women's football?

Womens football is a good thing to encourage wellbeing and for girls to have role models growing up. Sport has many proven benefits and it should be encouraged and promoted.

However...

All this happy clapping about how good the standard actually is does the entire event a disservice. The truth is that womens football is nowhere near the standard of mens football, to the extent that I don't think any of the women players on show at this WC would get into the Bristol Rovers team that won promotion to the Football League.

Whilst this might sound like it's stating the obvious, the way its covered makes it sound like you are watching Messi and Ronaldo at their peak.

And that is supposed to be a bad thing? The women's game has to start somewhere to establish itself. Women's tennis didn't rise to a near-equal level to the men's game by being shy about their sport.

Women's tennis is nowhere near the men's game, particularly at the moment

The idea that certain tournaments have been pushed to give equal prize money is in itself inequality until the women play the best of 5 sets!

Tennis is a big no no for me. In football and other contact sports, you can argue that men and women shouldn't be in competition with one another due to the physical element. And I agree with that.

But tennis is one person against another person, no physical contact and may the best man (or woman) win. And the money should be paid accordingly. I see no reason why women shouldn't play against men. But we know why. Because the men would dominate. They're better equipped for that job and do it better and as such deserve to earn more

Serena Williams is the only woman that would rank in the top 100 men I reckon.

Yes it is. The likes of Serena, Sharapova and Li Na who just retired are as marketable as players like Djokovic and Murray. In the early '00's during a transitional period around Sampras' retirement and before the rise of Federer, women's tennis was a more popular sport than the men's game. The men's game is more popular, but marginally so. That's the reason women summoned the audacity in the first place to ask for equal payment. Do you see women's footballers, golfers and the likes asking for equal payment?

Yes Sheriff. But there is no logical reason as to why they can't face men on the court. Other than the obvious, that men are naturally built bigger and stronger than women and in any given sport will come out second.

And their merchandising capabilities would drop substantially if they were losing regularly on a non sexually segregated court. Which is why, of course, that the segregation still exists. For marketing and sponsorship purposes

She would be lucky to get in the top 1000, john McEnroe would still beat her. She already got soundly beat by a guy around 200 in the world, 6-1 in 1 set. The week after the same guy dropped to about 400 in the rankings.
