A letter to Sol Campbell

Dear Sol
I am writing regarding your latest published thoughts on your former club, Tottenham Hotspur. I would like to ask you, are you aware of how offensive these remarks are to your former team-mates, managers and the club that gave you your chance in football and paid you handsomely to boot? Or is this an intended dig? Some kind of revenge on the criticism that you brought on yourself by betraying the people that paid your wages for ten years?

As a rational human being, I'm sure you can work out why Spurs fans were so offended. Consider the facts:
1. You ran down your contract so Spurs would not receive any compensation for the years of coaching and development that they provided.
2. You declined to join one of the top sides in Europe even though there were offers on the table.
3. You chose to join our biggest rivals, the most hurtful thing you could have done to those that hero-worshipped you.

Did you hold some kind of grudge against Spurs? Is there something you've not told us about that could justify your actions?
You could have done any number of things that would have prevented the abuse you've brought down upon your own head. You could have:
1. Left a year before when Spurs would have received a transfer fee.
2. Joined a club abroad.
3. Joined any EPL club other than AFC.

Why didn't you do any of these things? Spurs fans would have understood a transfer to one of the top Italian or other European sides; no-one would turn down the chance to experience a new culture, learn a new language and play with top European players. The only conclusion to reach is that you bottled it...you wanted all the comforts of home and was frightened of testing yourself against better and/or different styles of players.

The course of action you chose is the result of an ego so overblown, so self-centred and self-obsessed that I suspect your personality appears somewhere on the sociopathic spectrum. This is the reason why you should never, ever hold political office (Mayor of London!!!!!!) and the reason why you were never made England captain. To be a leader, an international captain, requires a generosity of spirit, charisma, diplomacy and an unselfish attitude; none of which you clearly possess. It wasn't because you were black that you were never made England captain; it's because you simply weren't good enough.

To those that suggest that Spurs fans should 'get over it'. To that I would reply that we would...but Mr Campbell insists on opening old wounds and rubbing salt in them on a regular basis! On the contrary, Sol should 'get over it'.

Let me ask AFC fans if they would feel differently if Thierry Henry had run his contract down and joined Tottenham on a free transfer? It wouldn't have happened because Henry is an honourable man and would not have disrespected his fans like that. Honour is not a word that appears in Sol Campbell's vocabulary nor an attribute that appears in his character; disloyalty, selfishness, yes...but never honour.

I suggest you look in the mirror Sol and try to develop the quality of self-reflection both literally and metaphorically. Take responsibility for your own selfish actions and stop disrespecting the club that nurtured and developed your talent and the fans that adored you.

Yours sincerely
A Spurs fan.

I'm simply informing you that a lot of what you are writing is nonsense, you are not debating at all you are just making one point over and over, I think you almost wish he still though of spurs a bit so you can justify your dislike to him, but he was simply asked a question where he just complimented arsenal at the time, which isn't surprising as we were the best team in the country then

None of nasri, cole or are were 14 years ago though, cole was 9 and the abuse for him has faded, nasri sometimes makes jabs but no one write long "letters" to him

We're going round in circles here Sir Digby, none of the individuals you mention have behaved in the same way as Campbell. The scenarios are not the same, the Campbell issue is unique and this is only being brought up 14 years later because he wishes to do so. I believe I have answered this point in my previous responses.

No I didn't make any comparison, I merely pointed out that I know Arsenal supporters that still bear a massive grudge against those players.

I know but I'm not one of them...he's a young man and he may or may not regret those comments in later years but I bear him no ill will...after all, he didn't run down a contract with Spurs, indicate that he would extend, state that he'd never join Arsenal and then do precisely that! - couldn't resist it

I take your point, but what you and your fellow fans seem to be unable to acknowledge is that it was Sol himself that brought it up again...it is he that can't let it go. You can and obviously do take the viewpoint that we as Spurs fans should ignore him and turn the other cheek. But even if you disagree with the reaction of Spurs fans you must admit that it's irritating at the very least to disregard the pot-shots he keeps taking at our club. I do believe that at least some Arsenal fans would react in the very same way if the roles were reversed.
