Gomez and Clyne....

The two biggest pluses for me today. New players and one of them is a complete novice.

Yet they both got up and down the field while protecting Skrtel and Lovren who in turn also had decent games. We wore down a very good Stoke team and had a little extra in hand from the otherwise anomous Cout. He is a luxury player worth his place every game.

That's where it's at for me this season, defend well give the ball to the next available midfielder and get Benteke and eventually Studge on the ball.

I honestly couldn't think of a better performance to start the season.

You were awful. The game was the worst of the weekend by far.

I think you are posting on the wrong match thread. You should be commenting on the Chelsea / Swansea thread. Or is it possible that you were hoping to finish the weekend above Liverpool and as such the result of this game means that your hopes have been dashed.

It was a good result, I dont think we played particularly well nor did we press well, I hope this isn't a result of total change in tactics. Benteke barely moved when not in possession if that was Balotelli he'd be getting ripped to shreds again, double standards or something.

He wasnt the only one though our pressing game from the front wasnt there instead we just happy to get back in numbers and waited. Theres a lot of improvement to come in terms of performance but first game, nerves and 6-1 on their mind maybe cautious to just settle into the game slowly and hope our quality upfront eventually provided and it did.

I hope its not a repeat of many games in the past few seasons constantly starting games slowly lack of intent or urgency, like we again saw at stoke. Picked it up a bit 2nd halve but still wasnt great.

Never the less brilliant result, stoke are a good outfit under hughes and its still one of the hardest grounds to go to, dream start, onwards and upwards.

We did defend fairly well, barring a few moments.

Maureen blaming it on the medical staff and refusing to talk about the blatant red card. He's losing the plot already, with Chelsea's disasterous preseason and terrible first game, it's all getting to him

The relevance of this result hasn't been fully appreciated yet by the Main Street media and the television pundits, make no mistake Stoke are a very, very good team and not many (if any) teams will beat them at their place this season.

Tactical masterclass by Brendan. Great performance by the lads.

The game had 'stalemate' written large all over it by the end, before the wee man popped up and scored that screamer.
I was very impressed with both Gomez and Clyne they defended very well, especially Clyne who headed over and stopped Diouf(?) from heading in. I know it's not one game, but when he recovers, Jonno will have trouble in getting Nathaniel out of that position.
Gomez, for me, has been a revelation. The Charlton fans loved him, and I can see why. He has a maturity far beyond his years.
For me, I do not envisage either being dropped/replaced in the short term. Each has been an excellent buy.

Jimmy

I really don't see it in Flanagan at all and it was always going to be Clyne starting in the right back spot.

I'd like to see Moreno in against Bournemouth over Clyne as we can have more emphasis in attack and I'd take Ibe out for Ings, Benteke looked so isolated all game and I think against Bournemouth we can afford a second striker.

I agree with the comments on Benteke, he did appear immobile at times, but by the same token, the whole back four of Stoke seemed to be on him and, as BR said in the press, that left less players available to mark the other forwards.

Sadly, I have to agree with your comment on Jonno too.flannagan, for me epitomised the whole ethos of the club, local boy, one club man, making it to the first team (who will forget his goal against Spurs at WHL?) but Clyne is the better player.

Say my name eating lemons.

Chelsea were dreadful and Maureen spitting his dummy out every week bores the hell out of me.
