If You Could Change........

........ Just one rugby law, what would it be, and how do you think it would change the game?

Those who have been on here for a while will know me as a traditionalist, OK a dinosaur. I would prefer to see me as someone who prefers to study the bath water before it is thrown out to check for babies that might get thrown out with it.

There are many things I would change in the game to make it more like I would like it to be. No, despite my protestations, the priority is not to get rid of TMOs. God knows I think they are a blight on the game, largely because they take the elite of the game further and further away from the grass roots.

Please don't get me started on residency qualifications. And yes, I would be quite happy if Nel, Strauss and Visser were not qualified to play for my beloved Scotland

There is also loads of stuff about scrum engagement that I have strong views about, but there is one thing which is more pressing. That is to reduce the number of subs.

Some, the uninitiated, will say what an irrelevance, but please hear me out. The current emphasis is on physicality, on pace, power and energy. Reduce the number of subs, force players to play the full 80 minutes, and you immediately shift the emphasis towards stamina, and the training required for that, rather than the brute force of today's game. We might even see players of the ilk of Bennett, Gibson, Duckham, Renwick, McLauchlan return to the game.

I don't have any stats on this, but I wonder how many injuries at the World Cup were caused by "fresh legs" clattering into "tired legs"?

By all means, have 8 subs on the bench if you wish, but limit their use to a maximum of 3, and only for injury purposes, as decided by a medic, just how it used to be

Just a thought, just putting it out there. Discuss.

The uncontested scrum argument could be got over by still having a bench of 8, but you can only use 3 of them.

Not really mate. Not if you have injuries during the game and changes are made as you suggested. then you lose a hooker or a prop of both, which is not uncommon. I see your point as i said, but limiting a contact sport like rugby to 3 subs per game doesn't seem like a fix.

If you shift the emphasis back on stamina, part of what you do in the pack is tackle the relentless pursuit of increased physicality, therefore fewer injuries in the first place. And there's nothing to stop the recycling of front row players if deemed necessary by a medic, and only if deemed necessary by a medic. Surreptitious tactical changes would have to be sorted.

If you are suggesting that we accept more than 3 injuries requiring substitution as the norm, then we really have a problem, don't we?

Show just watching the Edinburgh v Munster game.
Mate that's a shocking turnout for this game. It's so low they have abandoned using the stands and the fans are on the side of the pitch. Just a shocking turnout.

Must be fun for the few that are there tho to view from the sidelines

Mate, that's Edinburgh for you, they'd rather go to a fireworks display tonight. But they are Edinburgh, and they just HAVE to play at Murrayfield, regardless of how ridiculous it looks.

Compare that with Glasgow where, since they moved to Scotstoun Stadium, they have built up support to the extent that they pack the 10,500 seats pretty much every game - and they have scope to expand there. Then there is the on-field comparison to make.

Glasgow has it right, Edinburgh doesn't, but Edinburgh will never accept that Glasgow is better at anything.

Feck em.

Aye pal, just carry on enjoying the 1D code of rugby. Some of us prefer to look at the world in 3D

Oh, and learn to spell a bit better.

Mate, up to now I have defended your right to air your view, even if it was wrong. Sorry, can't do that on this. You have just described gridiron football. No thanks.
