Earlier this week Miguel Cotto was stripped of his crown as the WBC middleweight title holder having failed to comply with the rules and regulations stipulated by the WBC. One of the stipulations Cotto failed to adhere to,was paying the sanctioning fee required to put the belt on the line during his fight against Canelo tonight. Canelo however will be able to acquire the title if he beats Cotto.
Now personally I think this was a pretty strange move by the WBC and I was surprised they stripped him instead of maybe fining him. The timing of when to strip him of his belt was also strange.A few weeks before would have been more appropriate but on the week of the fight when the fighter needs as little distractions as possible? One must also ask, why Cottos camp failed to pay the fee? However, I won't lose any sleep over Cotto being stripped because lets be honest he was making a mockery of the 160lb title anyway. He was holding the belt hostage by fighting at a catch weight and despite saying he would fight GGG if he beat Canelo I think him losing his title has got him out of that potentially dangerous predicament.

Yeah apparantly Cotto had to pay 600 odd k step aside money to GGG so that he could fight Canelo then WBC wanted an additional 300 odd k if Cotto wanted to defend it. 1.1m in total apparantly. Ridiculous...
