Why does net spend matter? Did Man U spend or not spend that sum of money? It isn't as if Man U are Southampton--the money goes back to buying players.

I'm not one who often defends Van Gaal but in this case, I don't think it's entirely fair that his gross spend is used as a stick to beat him with when we've also recouped a significant amount of money from outgoings and reduced the wage bill by quite a bit too.
More needed spending if we're honest however he's failed miserably at getting the majority of players he has brought in to perform at a suitable level.
