Firstly you are only eligible for compensation if you have offered the player a new contract on the same terms or better.

Lets say hypothetically Accrington hadn't planned to offer any new contract to either player? Then no compensation required. If however you are daft enough to phone the club to say you are going to approach them, what is the very first thing Accrington would do?

Exactly, if they knew you were talking to them then they'd offer a deal to ensure they get compensation.

It's common courtesy to let clubs know you're talking to their players.

You don't have to but it's generally the way things are done.
