Week 22 results

Manchester United 3-0 Manchester City
Lukaku(Turan) 13, Subotic(Castro) 62, Lukaku(Gundogan) 78
MOTM - Romelu Lukaku.

Newcastle United 3-2 Hull City
Suarez(Firmino) 23, Fabregas(Candreva) 39, Suarez(Sturridge) 90; Vietto(Ferreira Carrasco) 64, Guedes(Ferreira Carrasco) 77.
Red: Roberto Firmino 43’
MOTM: Luis Suarez.

An intense second half affair saw a spirited Newcastle side claim all 3 points. The first half was somewhat one sided as the home side controlled the ball and created the chances, dominating the midfield battle and restricting Hull to counter attacks that were easily snuffed out by Godin and co. A moment of madness from Firmino as he left his studs showing in a tackle with Vrsaljko saw Newcastle reduced to 10. Despite a 2-0 lead at half time Tranq brought Sturridge on for Fabregas and changed to a 4-4-2. The game became wide open and Hull’s youthful exuberance, especially down the flanks started to expose gaps in Newcastle’s side. However the magical Suarez made sure his team won the game, a glorious long range strike enough to win the tie.

Everton 0-1 Stoke City
Giroud(Lamela) 38
MOTM: Danny Welbeck.

Another excellent display of energy and pressing from the front from Stoke this week, this time with the desired outcome. The energy they showed made it very difficult for Everton to get out as they looked to pass their way through Stoke unsuccessfully. Everton looked more of a threat later on with two strikers, Bony managing to hold the ball up where Ighalo had previously failed but Stoke held on for an important victory.

Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea
Griezmann (KDB), Costa (Gotze) ; Neymar (Vidal), Neymar (Alli)

An even game throughout, and end to end stuff where the score could’ve been a lot higher if not for the two top goalkeepers out on show. It was tied at a draw coming into the final stages of the game, Costa came on and ruffled some feathers, getting on the end of a Gotze cross. But quickly after Alli burst forward and played Neymar in to level the scores. At home, and with a well thought gameplan for this match Liverpool very slightly had the edge, but the draw proved to be the fair result that came out in the end.

AFC Bournemouth 2-3 Arsenal
Mandzukic(Payet) 23, Payet(FK) 73; Ronaldo(Modric) 3, Benzema(Ronaldo) 37, Benzema(Modric) 61
MOTM: Luka Modric.

After some late wins for Arsenal this was a more accomplished attacking display as they looked to keep pressure on Chelsea. Their midfield got on top of the opposition for the most part, especially Luka Modric who dragged his marker all over and the movement of the forwards ahead of him was too much for the Bournemouth defence today. There were some positives for Bournemouth though who managed two goals on the return of their former manager, with Dmitri Payet a constant threat as he found space and caused trouble with his deliveries into the box, on another day they might have even got something against a depleted Arsenal back line.

Birmingham City 1-1 Southampton
Goals: Vardy(Pastore) 17; Teixeira(Gabbiadini) 62
MOTM: Daniele De Rossi.

A tight game between two sides languishing in the bottom half. Southampton slightly edged things with their wide players causing threats today. Despite two quick CB’s though Vardy still managed to be a nuisance and his link up with Pastore was a threat throughout. Nothing to really separate them in the end.

Aston Villa 0-0 Leicester City
MOTM: Sergio Busquets.

Two excellent teams on show who were impossible to separate. Leicester looked to control the ball for the most part but Villa’s high workmate meant they couldn’t, whilst leicester were equally good in terms of closing space and slowing Villa down, leading to a stalemate in all areas of the field despite the excellent forward players on show. Both will be satisfied with the point.

Portsmouth 2-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Cavani(Silva) 27, Sterling(Silva) 50; Tevez(Shaqiri) 39, Dzeko(Coutinho) 81
MOTM: David Silva.

Two attacking teams with contrasting styles, one more possession based and the other looking to be explosive. It made for an entertaining game that couldn’t be split, both teams enjoying spells of dominance and both attacking with lots of vigour. Portsmouth caused most of their problems down the flanks, coming infield in the final third with Sterling and Silva particularly linking up well, whilst Wolves best attacks came from central positions with Coutinho and Shaqiri coming infield well to link with the AM’s and Tevez. Excellent game.
