LCFC Transfer Deadline Day Liveblog

Morning all,

It looks like Leicester's hunt for a new striker will go down the wire today. Here's the latest news;

Loic Remy - latest rumours are that we have cooled our interest. May now be going to Newcastle if they fail to land Doumbia.

Ahmed Musa - Leicester apparently still interested and may yet meet Musa's transfer clause, which is believed to be £22.7m.

Dwight Gayle - Seems like he is an option if we fail to land either Musa or Remy. Swansea also believed to have lodged a £7.5m bid.

Clement Chantome - midfielder from Bordeaux, out of contract this summer. Leicester have apparently put a €2.5m offer on the table.

Rumours from Twitter. Will post more as I see them.

****UPDATE****

Robinho is eyeing a return to the Premier League & his agent has contacted Swansea & Leicester about a Deadline day move. (Source: Mail)

****UPDATE 17:50****

Leicester are interested in Mame Diouf, according to Rob Dorsett.

I'd imagine that both have recall options should the worst happen, but apart from that yes - Wasilewski can cover as well and looks a calmer head than Benalouane.

I'm a bit sad to see De Laet go, even if only on loan. He was another part of the promotion squad, has great pace and decent control. Unfortunately I suppose his problem is that he hasn't progressed since he arrived - he still has lapses in concentration and judgement and they're just punished too often in the Premier League.

So a quiet Transfer Deadline Day at the King Power.....
Before yesterday we had already seen 3 new young exciting prospects bought in through January, but as always there was a day full of speculation and rumour yesterday.

CR had stated that he would like to bring a striker in if it was possible but if not then he wasn't unduly concerned. So we all, and the media went into overdrive about who, how much, good or bad move etc.

As the window shut last night I for one was pleased that we had kept Inler ( squad rotation but starting to be more of an influence when he gets game time) and that we hadn't bought a new striker in.

January is a tough time for a player to move and for the buying club. The player is expected to hit the ground running with new team mates and potentially a new system in a new country. Undue pressure can then lead to overly critical assessments by us all and that can crucify a career before it had started.
I much prefer a new player in the summer when they have the bonus of a pre season before the serious games start.

The names thrown around yesterday were interesting,
Remy - Still think we will go back for him at the end of the season
Musa - Interesting choice, statement of intent but COULD have taken the rest of the season to settle. Also the money side was obviously a sticking point between the clubs.
Gayle - seemed to draw an awful lot of unfair criticism on here yesterday. He is quick, knows where the back of the net is, needs confidence and a run of games.
Diouf - Unfortunately when Sky said we were after a " big name player" we were all underwhelmed by this link. This was mainly as Stoke were looking to recoup some money after the £19m outlay on their new midfielder.

A number of people were pointing fingers at Rudkin/Neville/Ranieri over our inability to bring anyone in.
But IMO we are too of the league with this group of players so there is no reason we can't carry on frightening the bigger clubs for the rest of the season.
I fully expect to see £60m spent on players in the summer IF we qualify for the Champions League......
But at the moment we love the team we have and I for one think that they will see the lack of activity as a plus and we can kick on starting tonight against Liverpool.

Ps If Vardy gets a season ending injury tonight, then Ranieri out I say 😉

The mere statement that we were in the market for a striker might have raised the prices. If we as fans can come to the conclusion that now is the time to be dangerous and go for it, you can bet that other clubs' chairmen will come to that conclusion about our mentality as well, and anyone who wanted to hold us to ransom tried it.

I don't believe for a moment that Claudio Ranieri is as calm as he suggested about not bringing in another striker, but also I doubt he'll be banging on Jon Rudkin's door this morning and demanding satisfaction. After all, Spurs are arguably in a very similar situation to us - one star English striker with concerns over who will back him up - and they didn't get a new striker either. Neither did Arsenal. Meanwhile Man City weren't interested in bolstering their squad as they'll want to give Guardiola as big a budget as possible in the summer. In fact, across the league, the ones who strengthened the most were the mid-table sides.

Tommy - as for the 4 players we were rumoured with:

Remy, I can't see any further action. That transfer is now dead as far as I'm concerned; he was a backup idea, a player for the present, and I can't see us going back in for him.
Musa, I think is more interesting. We may be back in for him in the summer, but we've made it clear that we won't be held to ransom. Still up in the air, but we may not have heard the last of it.
Gayle, I think is precisely as bad as people were suggesting and I'm happy that we haven't brought him in. If he once knew where the back of the net was, he seems to have long since forgotten. I think we can do better than Palace's cast-offs.
Diouf, from what I've heard he was offered to us rather than us going after him. Perhaps we had enquired in the past, or perhaps Mark Hughes had got the impression we were desperate. Either way, and regardless of his qualities or otherwise, I don't think we were ever really interested.

Dung

Completely agree re. Diouf

As you rightly point out the Top 4 clubs ( yes that includes us !!!!) were very quiet yesterday.
Whereas other clubs who are trying to catch the Top 4 or are flirting with relegation tend to be the busier clubs.
But if we all take a step back, was there a striker AVAILABLE that would have come. Probably not, strikers of the quality we are now looking for are few and far between.
Bring on the summer activity I say.

Just as an aside Dung
If we do make Top 4 how many new players would you expect in next seasons first game
1-2
3-5
Complete overhaul ?

I'd guess somewhere in the middle of that: 2 or 3. I can't see a complete overhaul. Complete overhauls are expensive and don't tend to work anyway.

IF ( and that's a big IF) we do make the Top 4 I think it will be interesting to see how the owners and the Management team approach next season.

I am sure there will be frustration, excitement, surprise and complete bewilderment along the way...... But after the last 20 years we wouldn't expect anything else.

It's never dull with us that's for sure!

I think this transfer window - or moreover this transfer deadline day - is a clear indication that the owners won't change their style, that they believe that budgeting is working for them and that they're not going to just start throwing millions of pounds around left, right and centre. After all, this was the time more than any time before for us to spend big and go for glory. We haven't done that, instead staying true to the principles that got us to this point.

Is this a little naïve? Possibly. But also I think you've got to give everyone some credit for not losing their nerve and paying what they would consider themselves to be over the odds. Certainly it's a big statement of belief in the current squad, and I wonder how they'll respond to the news that we've resisted bringing in big-money reinforcements. (And in the case of Musa, this certainly looked possible if we'd really wished it.)

Over to you, Mr. Ulloa...

Disappointed? Not too much. January isn't a good buyers market

And we shouldn't feel like we'll get left behind / caught up because of it.

None of the top 8 have made any significant signing throughout January let alone deadline day so its pretty much status quo

Just remembered all this outrage in the January transfer window. Seems the people in charge called it right, no matter how the season ends.
