Sad to hear the passing of the great Johnny King. When I was a kid, me and my mates would go and watch Tranmere Rovers on Friday nights. At the time they were possibly one of the worst teams about, always flirting with bankruptcy and closure.
Step forward two local men - Peter Johnson, chairman of Park Hampers bought the club and put Johnny King in as manager. With one game left King saved the club from certain death with a 1-0 win against Exeter.
From then on Johnny King promised Tranmere fans "a trip to the moon". The club went on to make Wembley a second home and took the them to the brink of promotion to the premier league.
My favourite quote of his: "Liverpool and Everton are like the finest cruise liners but I see Tranmere as a deadly submarine".
Thanks for the memories Mr King.

You never hear anyone have a bad word to say about him... and that's rare in this game isn't it!
