EXPANSION plans could open the door for the Old Firm as the English Football League looks to jump from four leagues to five.
ENGLISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE chiefs last night refused to rule out the Old Firm being invited to join a new expanded set-up down south.
Football League officials have been working on a plan to ease fixture congestion and are discussing the possibility of increasing the number of divisions from four to five in England by the 2019-20 season.
That would see six extra clubs invited to join and Celtic and Rangers could finally get their wish to join the English set-up.
Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey refused to kill off the Old Firm’s hopes but conceded that such a move would be difficult.
He said: “The whole discussion can be had. But I suspect the wider this gets drawn, the harder it would be to deliver to our clubs and the rest of the stakeholders in the game.”
Celtic supremo Dermot Desmond claimed in September last year that it was inevitable the Hoops and the Light Blues will be playing in the English Premier League.
The Football League is proposing a restructure that would increase the number of professional clubs from 92 to 100 spread across five 20-team divisions – EPL, Championship and Leagues One, Two and Three.
If the radical plan is given the green light it would start in time for the 2019-20 season with no relegation from the bottom tier in the previous campaign, meaning six clubs would be invited to make up the eight required.
The Football League are looking for a decision from their clubs at next June’s agm with a final call – including the backing of the Premier League and The FA – on the proposal needed by November 2017.
Dermots up for it
Money money money.

We'll get all the (bbollocks) about not putting up with all the baggage that comes with OF teams playing in England so can't see it happening.
On the surface though, it's the only way OF teams can flit to England through league restructuring.
