England's record in knockout matches

in major tournaments is woeful. Apart from 66 we've only won a very small handful of knockout games when it comes to both the Euros and World Cup.

Our record in the Euros is particularly poor as we've never actually won a knockout match in the history of the tournament.

The one time we did progress in a knockout game was only thanks to winning a penalty shootout against Spain in Euro 96. The match itself was a 0-0 draw.

We're not a very good side when it comes to internationals.

Had one fluke tourney on home soil and people think because of that we should be up their with the worlds elite

I have been but a couple of good England sides. 98 and 02

I know the records don't show it that way. But there were All those oh so nears

Not too many oh so nears in Euros history though. Gazza missing that toe poke against Germany in Euro 96 bring the obvious exception.

England needs to massively up their game in these Euro tournaments and if Denmark and Greece can win one then we can at least start winning some knockout games for a change.

Because its always been about shoe horning the best players in.

2006 was a golden, golden chance to win the World Cup, England had the best two CBs in the world, best left back, two of the best CMs, Joe Cole in the form of his career and one of the best strikers in the world.

4-3-3 with Hargreaves holding, protecting an already solid defense and allowing Lampard and Gerrard the freedom to attack would have given England one hell of a chance of winning, but no Michael Owen had to play, so 4-4-2 it was.

Same is happening again, England with the best and most balanced side out will actually have a decent chance (not as glorious an opportunity as 2006 but a good one never the less), but Roy's obsession with strikers and shoe horning Rooney in come hell or high water is going to ensure an early plane home.

England have the players and resources to start competing in tournaments, if we want to we need to start appointing managers who put the team balance and structure first.

Shoehorning the most marketable players into the side has been the England way for a while now.

Sir Alf Ramsey admitted to not always picking the best players and instead picked the players that best suited his system. Worked rather well for him didn't it.

Either way it's a mentality issue for England as well in these crunch knockout games. We need to learn from Spain who were perennial underachievers for decades before it all clicked for them.

Owen didn't play against Portugal, and we didn't play 442, and still went out. Can't blame that for not winning the world cup.

This is a shocking record, to be fair.

So England's shocking record in knockout games continues.

Had a feeling we wouldn't win a knockout game in this tournament either
