United Ethos?

In our current D$ck measuring contest with Real over Pogba lets bid adieu to our longstanding policy of 'we don't buy stars but develop them'.

Its all well going out there to make a 'statement' and show 'intent' but it would perhaps be better if instead of bluster we strengthen the team all round. The strikeforce for one leaves a lot to be desired and even the midfield can do with two additions.

Its a bit of a myth saying we don't buy stars, we develop them.

In my lifetime we broke loads of British transfer records bringing players in.

Keane, Cole, Rio, ADM, Veron, Bryan Robson, Mata and I think Pallister was one too.

We do develop stars but we also historically splash the cash and have done for a while

Robb

I wouldn't say it is a myth. I would say it is a load of bollox.

We have done both ever since I can remember.

Of course we buy stars. We'd have to have some academy to have the luxury of not doing so.

I think the lie is that we have a strong tradition of developing stars. Since 92 we've hardly developed any star players. Ronaldo is the only obvious one, but we paid a fair chunk of cash for the pleasure. United are great at producing star players for mid table (and below) premier league clubs, and championship level players. We haven't produced a superstar player since Beckham and Scholes. Unless we want to piggy back on the success of Pogba, whom we hardly have a chance.

Do I detect some bin dipper jealousy over our wealth?

It must be hard to know that your rivals shirt deal is worth twice your own clubs value and enough pocket change to waste 100 million on one player.

Do you detect an opinion???

In my lexicon of football semiology, the antonym for the entry describing "Manchester United" as a club is "Leicester City".

Leicester City.

The antonym and the antidote to the bloated excess of a franchise that have followers who feel a superior sense of entitlement.

The followers who mostly went into hiding last season but have now emerged to revel in the multi-million pantomime that the new manager will bring.

This is what made Leicester's title triumph such a breath of fresh air and a welcome slap in the face to the privleged.

Unfortunately, I sense the miasma of dissipation returning.

This is not a good thing. IMO.

^ No, it's what I've stated in my comments.

My opinion on an aspect of the modern game going into a new season.
