United progressed in the mickey mouse cup thanks to a debut winner from new loanee Tony Andreu, but the Terrors were made to work hard for the victory and were taken to extra time by a resolute Peterhead team who were led by the inspired former United target Rory McAllister.
It was a funny old game. We utterly dominated and in the first half particularly must have had around 80% of the ball. It was pass pass pass but at times it was slow and laborious and without any purpose.
United did however take a very early lead, Charlie Telfer hitting a swerving strike from distance that bamboozled the keeper. Peterhead were never in the game until inexplicably Scott Fraser played a misplaced pass on the edge of his own box and McAllister slotted home. United regained the lead shortly after, Van der Velden coming inside from the left and smashing a shot home from the edge of the box, but Peterhead immediately replied with what was a very good goal, the winger skinning Spittal and putting in a terrific cross for McAllister to head home.
United huffed and puffed through the second half and extra time but you never really felt like a goal was definitely coming, despite the team hitting the crossbar three times. Thankfully a good run and cross led to an unmarked Andreu to head home and United comfortably held on to progress to the next round.
With the draw on Tuesday, United will hope to avoid a trip to Wales or Northern Ireland in this joke of a competition.
On a separate note, I assume this competition will now put to bed any idea of "colt" teams being introduced into the league. All the u20 teams have now been pumped out, with the last surviving team being ragdolled by Livingston on Saturday evening. These teams would offer nothing to the league system and this idea should die now. Hopefully they won't even be included in next season's Irn Bru cup.

He does get a harder time than other players, he gives the ball away more often however - although that's partly down to his role in the team. I just find him really frustrating, that's all.

Yeah he is a frustrating player, I agree, but he's still a young boy. I like the fact he always tries to get on the ball, even after what happened last season. The fact he's still got the confidence to do that bodes well for the future.

If only he would even attempt to use his right foot, even once...! Anyway, nice not having Donaldson on from the start, he only almost flogged one goal when he came on late in the match...!

I hate that kant. Hate him. He is like a daddylonglegs, all flopping about with no idea what he's doing.
He came on and the first thing he did was have a wee joke with big Rory up front. Mind not on the game at all. Seconds later the big lad tears him inside out and nearly scores.
He is ridiculously unprofessional and I hope that we get the two new lads up to fitness quickly and ship that kant out in January.

So, just to be clear, he's definitely not your favourite player in the squad?

You could say that
Every time I looked at him on Saturday I wanted to stand up and shout abuse at him. I genuinely don't think I've ever disliked a player as much as I dislike him.

He's a plum.

Again we spent much of the game throwing balls into the penalty area (from good positions it should be said) but we had nobody attacking the ball in the air. It's very frustrating.

Unfortunately not going to change anytime soon until we have a 'proper' centre forward.
We have VDV, Cammy and Tony who can all play no 10 but nobody to play no 9.
The option of hitting the ball into the box for a CF to attack is an option we don't have.
We seem to want to play through teams in every game which is fine when it comes off but we'll meet teams this year who will sit in until we run out of ideas.

old shed boy
As much as I think we've done some excellent business this year in bringing players in, I do think we're going to rue missing out on a big number 9.
That's assuming of course that we don't bring someone in on a free, although as last season proved that rarely works out...
