Rooney - Can an England Manager win?

Particularly with our press?

If he plays and England perform woefully. “Drop Rooney he’s holding the team back."

But you could bet your sweet arŝé that the England Manager who dropped Rooney and inevitably failed would get slaughtered for doing so.

“How can you drop him? He’s still our best player!"

Now I have my own opinion of him………..

Sir Alex undoubtedly made him a better all-round player. But he’s never repeated the form for England at a tournament he showed in 2004 as 19 year old boy. Watching him in that tournament was like watching a young pup let off his leash for the first time, fearless and enjoying himself.

Yes he can’t go back to being that player, yes injuries can be blamed, but even in the space of 2 years he had lost something from his game that made him SO exciting to watch in 2004.

Anyway...Rooney is player who has been indulged beyond belief

We took him to a Championship when he was banned for 2 of the 3 games we were due to to play FFS

His never really delivered on the potential in crisis moments for England especially at big tournaments since 2004. 2004...its 2016 now! Time to move on

He's been shuffled back into midfield now at the expense of others and he simply is not a midfielder. He hasn't got the consistency in his passing, his first touch can be really poor at times, he needs too much time & space and gives the ball away often. There is no point trying to turn him into Paul Scholes he simply doesn't have that all round ability

He held United to ransom and got a massive contract. He's on the level of the genuine superstars of the game financially but they left him behind in terms of performances on the pitch long ago. He's not really been consistently good for 3 years now so long should you keep going with him?

He won't leave United unless paid off so is likely to end up in the States or China receiving another massive payday for doing very very little. Rooneys time as a first 11 player at a top club is over. Nothing he's done in the last 3 years suggests he can get back to the level of the very best

England just need to move on. Enough with Rooney, Whether its a ban, an injury before a tournament or whatever there has been far too much indulgence....it has to stop for the team to move forward

Deluded, do you really think Rooney would go to China? He'd have to learn a new language for starters. He'd be a novelty to the yanks so I expect he would go there if anywhere and Coleen would probably love it

I gave this article 5 because of the comment about the media. I strongly believe the media is a major part of the problem.

It is somewhat funny that even though Rooney has been absolute bobbins for England and United for sometime now in major tournaments he is,still, the last player to have performed to high standards in a major tournament for England (2004).

And for me that is the most depressing thing (in context of course).

Couldn't give a flying one about England (or any national team for that matter). But any coach that drops the best player available from any team because they are too weak to stand up to pathetic journalistic hyperbole, or reactionary responses from 'couch coaches' on social media, is not really a worthy coach at all.

when the sun newspaper, and the kind of idiots that frequent these forums, starts to have any influence on how you make your team selection/line-up, then it is time to find a different vocation

Completely, I don't blame Rooney for it, although I do agree with the sentiment that he could have looked after himself better at times. A Ronaldo or Ibrahimovic isn't the norm though, Rooney is now at the age where I expect him to decline.

I just think, due to a combination of factors, and despite the great career he has had, he could have been
even better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rooney's more of a mule compared to Ibra and Ronnie, who are Thoroughbreds. It's plain old genetics and Wayne didn't have particularly great genetics compared to other great players. Leads to more injuries and eventually the downfall. We can only imagine a Rooney not being from Liverpool....

Have to agree with Respectedabsolutetruth11

The indulgence of this ridiculously overrated player (and disgrace of a man btw) has gone beyond a joke now. He's been absolute dross for years now. Young MFs international careers are suffering to get an overhyped, overweight, PAST IT, so-called star into a team he's no longer fit to play in.

This is the reason that England are so far behind the other top nations. Tournament after tournament, when the others are playing their young bright prospects, we are leaving ours at home to take some out of shape, past it, performer of yesteryear. Near on every tournament there is a buzz about some amazing 18 year old for Brazil, Italy France or Germany. FFS Germany managed a buzz about an entire team of young'uns. And those nations will frequently drop non performing veterans for a hungry talented youngster, something we never do.

I rarely agree with Alan Shearer but he's spot on when he says Rooney needs to retire from international football. The national team is in big trouble until he does. If he was any kind of decent Englishman he'd admit to himself and the world he's past it and remove himself for the good of the team. He watches the games afterwards so must be able to see the embarrassment he's become.

**People need to shut up about his England goal scoring record as well because it's only impressive until you take a look at the opposition the goals were scored against. The vast majority are against the international dross and half decent teams England would be expected to beat.

Only 5 of Rooney's international goals have been scored against a top team. So he's actually rubbish in world terms. Oh yeah he'll smash 'em away in droves against the likes of San Marino, Kazakhstan and Andorra. But come the finals and the REAL opposition, he's a useless

Jeez people bang on about his record and in fact he's never scored a goal against top seeded opposition at any of the tournaments he's gone to

Never actually knew that until I looked just now. I always knew he wasn't all that but I didn't realise the situation was so tragic. Hailed in the same sentence as the country's greatest ever whilst never having scored against major opposition at a tournament in 13 years WTF??!

Scholes was decent for England. Nothing more, nothing less. I can't recall any outstanding matches he had at international level.

Really...so a hattrick from a CM is nothing outstanding at international level? How exactly would you define "outstanding" then? Score 50 goals and then suck you off in the tunnel after the match?

"It's safe to say Scholes had a decent run in midfield with England and we did nothing"
___________________

By that logic every England player since 1966 has been crap.

Scholes scored more goals for England than Gazza, Sheringham or John Barnes. Were they crap too then? Even Becks only scored two more goals than Scholes - in almost twice as many matches.

I'm not saying Scholes was amazing - and we all know that England team underachieved - but to single out Scholes as having been poor for England is ridiculous.
