It is lazy journalism. West Ham want Bats on loan so it's an easy story to write.

The player doesn't worry me. If he hypothetically threw a paddy with us, by that time he'd be well into he's 30's and probably a rotational option anyway. People don't seem to realize a footballer trying to engineer a move is ultimately a man trying to change jobs. Some of their reasons can seem suspect to us given the money we earn by comparison, but at the end of the day they're just people who want to better themselves like the rest of us, and thus shouldn't be held accountable to a contract anymore than a typical office worker looking to change firms.

Problem is his age combined with our lack of need and West Ham's valuation, would be a poor use of resources from our prospective. Don't think we'd be his best option either, at his age he needs to find a team who play 4-2-3-1 to make use of his versatility as a squad player the older he gets.

There are plenty of other players I'd rather us sign first. Also sometimes Payet looks a bit slow for the PL and we have more than enough slow, cumbersome midfielders cough cough Matic and Alonso.

Not wanting to take away anything from Payet ability wise because he clearly has plenty of that.

I'd rather us sign an all-action type midfielder like Vidal or Nainggolan to play alongside Kante in CM.

I'd like Payet. He's a good player and I don't think his attitude would be a problem since he really wouldn't be able to do any better than Chelsea if he was here whereas he can do so much better than West Ham.

Payet or Rodriguez is an interesting question.

The cheaper, PL proven player with only a few good years left or the expensive, more talented player without PL experience but approaching his peak? I'm on the fence there.

Not for me either. I'm sure he is a great player, but he's already 29 - and he's on a long term contract so whoever buys him would be spending well over the odds.
Plus, as others have mentioned, we have other more pressing positions to fill first - a centre back, a left wing-back, and a box-to-box midfield player to play alongside Kante. He would hardly be much of an improvement on Pedro and Willian, so it seems a waste of our efforts.
