Failed Transfer Window

Well, there we go then - the end of yet another frustratingly poor window for the club. One mediocre permanent bench warming signing and one totally uninspiring loanee who can't even make the Bournemouth team.

Aspirations were high when it was reported we were putting in a £12m bid for Schniederlin and links with other top line players were rife. But no, it was the same old Baggies, do it one the cheap with little or no ambition.

No, I don't advocate buying for buying sake but surely there are suitable players out there and look at what other clubs similar to our size have achieved - West Ham, Palace, Southampton for example.

What really makes me laugh is all these people saying January is a bad time to buy, wait till the summer window. What planet are they on ???  What makes them think it will be any differerent this summer to what it has always been every summer at the Baggies be it JP or the Chinese - do it on the cheap, make do with the scraps.

Yes, by the Grace of God, we're lying in 8th place on 33 points with a dangerously ageing and thin squad and it only needs a few long term injuries coupled with suspensions and we could drop like a stone. The swathes of empty seats are hardly going to be filled with inspired fans who listened to mixed messages coming from TP and the club.

Perhaps JP was right when he stated on TV that we "we are punching above our weight and in reality, we are a mid-table Championship club"

Disappointing

Cheer up, Baggie Man. Have to disagree with Jake Livermore being mediocre. I think he's a solid acquisition who is anything but a bench warmer. Getting him means we can dispose of Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman on a permanent basis. We've also resolved the Berahino issue, and disposing of three unwanted players is good business too. It's three salaries freed up, and there will be a bigger pond to fish from at the end of the season as other clubs' players' contracts expire. I don't many PL clubs made marquee additions in January.

Hi Aries,
I think the thing that frustrates me most is how the club and Pulis publicly state the need to acquire players and the money is there for three or four etc etc and then nothing happens,
If the hierarchy just came out and said our spending will be very limited for whatever reason in the same way as Sunderland did, fair enough, you could accept that. It's the anticipation you're given which is then knocked back that gets to you. It's a bit like a child being promised to be taken to a sweet shop and have a choice of four different sweets only to be told when he gets there he can only have half of just one.

Is it such a failure?
Whilst I agree your disappointment, I think January is an awful time to buy. Pulis described it as a "feeding frenzy" and I'm sure that's right.
Surely it not so much about who you buy as what use you make of them. In that respect Pulis has done well, turning Phillips and Nyom into real players. I still have hopes for Chadli. I have hopes for Livermore and think Wilson will contribute too.

On our patch Wolves and Villa thought they had good transfer windows in the summer. In both cases they were quite wrong.
I agree the squad is ageing. I also think it is more important than ever that we really do buy several new players in the summer.

Transfer windows are designed to induce panic buying.

It's the whole point of them.

Most clubs, based on this latest window, have cottoned onto this scam.

Some gullible owners still went ahead and paid over-the-odds for bang average players though....

I'm pretty sure BBC Sport said that, for once, the value of players sold by PL clubs in a January window was higher than the value of players bought.
