Anthony Martial

In a desperate move to keep the player at the club and a move that has not been given approval by Jose Mourinho, rumours are doing the rounds that Martial is going to made captain of Manchester United in an attempt to ward off interest from various clubs and more specifically Liverpool.

It's been rumoured for a while now that Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Martial on more than one occasion and with Jose Mourinho willing to do business with the historic rivals, Manchester Utd hierarchy have readjusted their chess board without the consent of their manager.

Martial has recently put in some tremendous performances since making it back into the team despite Mourinho's efforts to halt his Utd career but it's been reported that that this has only been to put himself in the shop window.

He'll be tremendous under Klopp, a manager that allows his players to express themselves on the pitch and plays attacking football.

So goals against West Ham are relevant but goals against the likes of Dortmund aren't?

These mancs have lost it. So deluded and blinkered.

Don Draper, I'm trying to be as non-biased as possible here. When you had your leg lifted having to pay £39M(?) for Martial, three times the original value, I thought, this guy must be something really special.

I have yet to see it. For me Divock is way in front of him. This isn't a LFC v. MAnc rant, it's an honestly felt belief.

So let's have a look at some of these stats that Liverpool fans are so keen to state that Origi is on top on, especially on ones based around average minutes on pitch etc...

Divock Origi Anthony Martial
Goals 4 3
Assists 2 4
Shots per game 0.9 1.7
Pass Success % 75.4 82.2
AerialsWon 0.6 0.5
MotM 0 2
Rating 6.41 6.94
Tackles 0.3 0.7
Interceptions 0.1 0.1
Fouls 0.5 0.9
Clear - 0.3
Blocks 0.1 0.1
Dribbles 0.3 1.5
Fouled 0.8 0.9
Offsides 0.4 0.2
Dispossessed 0.9 1.7
Bad Controls 1.4 1.5
Key Passes 0.4 1
Average Passes 10.3 23.3
PS% 75.4 82.2
Crosses 0.1 0.5
Long Balls 0.3 0.6
Through Balls - 0.1

Out of these 23 indicators then Martial is better than Origi in 16 areas, Origi is better in 5 and 2 are drawn.

That's a horrendous post on every level.

Most of the stats are meaningless, and your comprehension of them is abysmal.

All stats are fine in context.

MOM awards isn't a stat. It has no relevance to anything. In the same team maybe, but with competing teams it's meaningless.

Tackles, well putting in a tackle doesn't mean a player puts in a shift. Are the tackles won? What are the tackle stats for other forwards? It's all about context.

I don't think anyone would deny Martial is a good dribbler. Doesn't make him a better footballer than Origi.

Passing stats fair enough, but then as the point of the attack I wouldn't expect Origi to be making many key passes, rather getting on the end of them. As a wide forward Martial will have a more passing role naturally.

You see it's all about context not just bland numbers.

We will never agree here, but I think Man Utd fans criminally overrate Martial, and typically always underrate any Liverpool players to the point where even the likes of Suarez weren't rated until 13/14.

Some Liverpool fans do overrate our players no doubt also, but I don't see much between Origi and Martial, and the stats really bear that out as differences are minimal.

I would debate the ceiling point.

Origi is quick, strong, scores every type of goal and has already achieved a lot at a young age. I think he could be anything really and is under the right manager to help him become something.

Martial clearly has a high ceiling but it's beyond me how you can see the difference between them as vast.

And on Martials goals I would say I would expect more from him if he is so much better than Origi, as has been claimed here.

Forwards generally don't have similar goal stats if one is vastly superior to the other. Whether they start wide or not.
