eSports

Interesting article on eSports on the main football page this afternoon

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/39119995

Basically it seems to suggest that eSports will become more like a mainstream sport in the next few years.

Arguably with LoL it's already there and also has a following equivalent to medium sized sports. The prize money across all e-Sports games was pretty big last year ($76m) and I must admit I like watching eSports for games that I actually play and follow the championships etc.

With some Football clubs looking to lead the way into this market will we see the explosion of cash like we have seen with Football over the last decade into eSports? How will football teams take this in the future, can we really see a world cup of eSports, rather than just concentrating on the individual games?

"I seriously doubt anyone would consider chess a 'sport'."

I wasn't arguing that chess should be considered a sport, it's just that chess isn't immediately dismissed because it is not a sport.

I don't see eSports as "real" sports, although I would argue there is more justification to call them sports than something farcical like dressage.

"Funny that chess never gets that treatment despite being many times simpler than most e-sports."

All of that sentence is bizarre.

Why do gamers feel so determined to have it classed as a 'sport' anyway?

Why does it matter if they're just classed as gaming competitions, for prize money?

Genuine question, I don't see why it is important for either side to either say it is or isn't a 'real' sport.

Gaming is not a sport.

I am a massive gamer, there is nothing about it which amounts to a sport. It's ludicrous anyone thinks so.

Because it makes you feel healthier that you've just done 4 hours of sports and not just sat in a chair twiddling your thumbs for 4 hours

It's not a sport, it's competitive gaming, why this lustre to try and label everything a sport is beyond me. (It'll be down for the olympics next)

That's why a different word is used - eSports.
