Marcos Alonso

Morning chaps, just been watching match of the day and wanted to get your opinion on Marcos Alonso.

When he signed a lot of people questioned the price tag, his ability and a few times this season I've seen Chelsea fans proper lay into him.

Every time I've seen him this season though, he looks the real deal, top quality full back.

I haven't watched him every game however.. so how highly do you guys rate him? Quality player? Or a good one in a system that allows him to excel?

Technically Alonso is brilliant, his crosses are 9/10 everytime and his footballing brain and decision making is top notch IMO.

If he had Moses' pace he'd be one of the best LWBs in the world let alone the premier league

Rarely see him not get the most awkward of balls to him, under control immediately as well.

Overall, I'm quite happy with the way he's turned out for us this season.

Don't know until you try it, both are world class in their positions

I was a very hard critic of his early in the season, my feelings have thawed somewhat but only to mixed.

The criticisms remain, the biggest one being how vulnerable he is on the ball in tight spaces, he rarely plays his way out of trouble and is prone to giving the ball away. His lack of pace and particularly his lack of acceleration are also areas he is poor.

In his favour, and something I didn't realise at first is how big the guy is, he's huge and that is a real bonus, particularly with Azi at the back.

He's improved over the season and was very good yesterday but I think he could be bettered, not that it is a priority, again his physical presence as an attribute shouldn't be underestimated. Thinking back to his goal against Arsenal against another full-back, there was only going to be one winner.
