FIFA Under 20 World Cup 2017 - Update

The tournament group stages are done and dusted, and England have safely progressed.

Our opening game 3-0 win over Argentina was massive. Argentina were the better team for long periods, but England were clinical. Goals from Calvert-Lewin, Armstrong and a late penalty from Solanke sealed the win. We also saw use of the Video Replay system, leading to a red card for Martinez for an elbow.

The second game produced a comical moment, Fikayo Tomori scoring a 50 yard own goal. A set-back in a game that ended 1-1 - Lewis Cook getting the opener.

Finally we met the hosts South Korea, who had looked very impressive in winning their opening games 3-0 against Guinea and 2-1 v Argentina. Barca kid Lee Seung-Woo was rested for the England game, though. England performed well and Kieran Dowell got the winner.

This has put us into the round of 16 against Costa Rica - the best 3rd place team of the group stages. They lost to Iran, drew with Portugal and beat a weakened Zambia side. This looks a game we should win.

The Quarter Finals could see us face either Mexico or Senegal, who both finished runners up in their groups.

Jonjoe Kenny at right back has looked very good so far, and the way the goals have been spread about offers some encouragement. Although we may wish for one of our strikers to start offering more of a consistent goal threat.

France have been the stand-out team so far, winning all 3 games with 9 scored none conceded.
South American nations Uruguay and Venezuela both have played well, and hosts South Korea look dangerous.

Action restarts on Tuesday, with Englands game on Wednesday.

Some good performances from the lads. Calvert Lewin to step up from league one, premiership and now U20's is credit to him and the work done with him mainly at Sheffield United and then Everton.

Late bloomers? Or actually the opposite and get promoted to the senior squad at early age?

In fairness, our group was relatively easy. It'd interesting to see how they do now in th KO stage

As I said, our group was easy. Lost at the first step of the KO stage.

Zambia 4-3 Germany. Looked like an absolute classic of a game.
