Question about goalkeeping..........

........so this really gets me about today's goal keepers. It seems to me that today's goal keepers are always going at the ball with the wrong hand. ie if they have to dive, then we were always coached to go at the ball with the correct hand-so if the shot is high to keepers left-he should go at it with his left hand. and vice versa.

i see so many keepers today stretching over themselves simply to use their right hand-like last night's Madrid keeper going with his right hand to his left side.

my sons tells me that i am an old man and things are done differently these days. but in my day keepers would have been slapped for doing what the Madrid keeper did last night-basic mistake in my view.

any thoughts or am i missing something?

Jennings would certainly never have done that craap

Why do keepers never start a the post furthest away from the corner kick, you always see whats in front of you ,and you're faster moving forward than backwards, this used to be page one on the goalkeeping manual at one time.

this

when i played, if the gk was at front post fir a corner, i would always curl the ball in to far post, scored three times direct from corner doing that and many gols from team mates also

Can you still curl them in ?

I've played against keepers who stand at the near post.

You only have to screen him out with one or two of your players, and then kick all your corners either out towards the penalty spot or towards the far post.

Jennings

That's a blast from the past! Loved those books.

Watched escape to victory the other day and those keepers held everything instead of parrying it, plus they wore no gloves. Today's keepers try to flamboyant it seems and in fairness, parrying a shot instead of catching whilst diving is far more aesthetically pleasing

It was far easier to handle a wet leather ball than it is today, with the much smoother polyurethane skins used.

A single sweat smudge from a header, could make the difference in a match.

I guess it's the price we have to pay for better ball aerodynamics.

1st senior match I played (was 18 at the time), at the 1st corner I took up a position midway on the goal line, only to be grabbed by the collar and dragged back to the far post by my captain with the words "that's where you start for a corner, if I ever see you anywhere else I will kick your fecking arris out the ground you stupid twaat!

This drives me crazy too. Every time I watched the replay I was thinking I can't understand why you go with your right. It seems the way these days to go with the "top" hand. I just don't understand the thinking behind it. You have to move your whole body further to reach the ball.

Another even more recent bugbear for me is the tendency now to parry shots back into the middle. When did that start being a good idea? In my day it was always the aim (if you couldn't catch it cleanly) to turn the ball around the post for a corner, or at least force the ball wide away from danger.
