So St Johnstone lost to a Lithuanian side at home last night
Disappointed to say the least
It was hardly a stellar performance from Rangers, but at the very least, at this stage of the competition, you should not be losing your home games and thats what St Johnstone have done last night.
I hope they prove me wrong over in Lithuania, but I was reading Tommy Wright's comments after game last night and seen this
"Every one of the teams in this competition are all probably technically better than us, that's why we can't allow them time on the ball. We didn't get in about them enough in the first half."
I'm sorry but what??
Every team in the Europa League is probably better technically than St Johnstone?? Seriously Tommy??
Comments like this infuriate me
I dont want to put Trakai down......but....
St Johnstone finished 4th in the Scottish League last season. Scotland has a population of about 5-5.5million people, we are a country that is obsessed with football and St Johnstone's average gate is over 4000
Trakai finished 2nd in the 8 team Lithuanian league, the population of Lithuanian is probably about half that of Scotland's, their national sport is basketball, football is a clear second, and Trakai's average gate last season was about 250!!
If the mindset genuinely is that St Johnstone are not technically better than a side like this, then I am sorry but you are beat before a ball is even kicked Tommy!!

How many of the semi finalists had to play qualifiers though, Curly?

But that is a different matter Ath, we have to play qualifiers because of our poor co-efficient as we are $hite
--------
And our coefficient is poor because we keep getting knocked out of qualifiers by teams halfway through their season.
If the biggest argument against summer football is that it will compromise our chances of getting to the semi finals of the Champions League, that isn't something we should be too worried about.

I'm sick of saying it but nothing will change for Scottish teams in Europe until we move to summer football.
Most of these teams we face in qualifiers are bang in the middle of their league campaign at this time of year.
That's your problem, not technique.

How many of the CL semi finalists play summer football
Poor, poor excuse

He's not
If he was correct we would not have had the past successes in Europe that we did
-----------------------------------
Curly, to your 2 points.
Firstly how many of the semi finalists have to play early (or any) qualifiers at this time of year?
Back when we had our successes we weren't playing European games in pre season, if anything you are confirming my point there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, so how many teams that were semi finalists of the CL or Europa Cup play summer football?
Its just a fantasy to suggest that playing summer football will improve our European standings
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be fair you could ask how many semi finalists come from countries who play qualifiers at this stage. The fact that this is the stage of the absolute bottom of dregs is why Scotland might want to consider having a league season in line with the competition we'll face off against. Not saying it'll magically work but the current situation isn't getting the results we want right now

serious problems with how youngsters are being coached, if Lithuanian teams are regarded as being better technically imo
