Captain Carrick

Micheal Carrick is the new captain of Manchester United

Now I don't see the point in this. Firstly I can't imagine he will be a main stayer in the first team due to his age

Secondly surely it's his last season, why not give it to someone who is going to be here fir the long term.

Now fair play to him he's been an excellent player for us but for me Ander Herrera should be our captain

The way he plays like a typical English captian.

I guess it is all down to what you see at the end of the day.

I think the fact it's Carrick means that Jose still isn't quite sure who's going to be our general.

Good move though as he's given a club trooper the honour while knowing he won't expect to play every game.

I think Herrera would be my pick but I suspect he'll be captain often enough.

Nah, I think he just sees Carrick as our most experienced player and like when he choose Rooney last summer doesn't expect him to be a regular first teamer.

We don't really have a 'general' so makes sense to give it to a player who understands the club well and is well respected by the rest.

Well deserved I say. Michael Carrick deserves it.

I don't agree with the Rooney bit. I dont think Jose had known just how bad Rooney had got, and still saw him as a major player.

Did Carrick play in a lot of our big games last year?

Aye, home and away against Arsenal and Spurs, home to Liverpool away to City, both legs of the EL Quarter Final, he certainly featured in a lot of big games.

I assume Jose will play him in away games in Europe, especially in the knock-out stage (if we make it) and some big away games in the league, calming influence and all that.

Is Herrera confirmed as vice-captain? Not seen it anywhere.

I mean more that he kept Rooney captain because of his experience more than anything, the same reason he's probably given the captaincy to Carrick now.

For me, Herrera needs at least another good season before he can be made club captain. He has had more average seasons with us than good ones so far. I would prefer to ensure that he is not a one season wonder before assuming that he will be a mainstay for years to come.

By making Carrick club captain, Jose is giving himself the flexibility to name whoever he wants as captain from one week to the next - assuming that Carrick will be used sparingly. He can then decide on a long term captain later/next season.

Smart move imo.
