LVG brought us back into CL in his first season, Jose did likewise albeit through a different route.
LVG got sacked in the second season (even though there was the FA cup) for not achieving CL. So atleast that is what the benchmark for Jose would be, a CL qualification. Other major contenders for the top four trophy also play CL so that should not be treated as an extra disadvantage.
Does everyone agree?
Jose expectations

My primary expectation is for us to play better football. I would also expect a top 4 finish if he adds to the midfield. With what we have at the moment, it will be a challenge to break into the top 4, but by no means impossible.
If Jose doesn't qualify for the CL, I still think the club will stick with him.

I don't care for this so called benchmark..
if we haven't contended for the title and scrape 4th or 3rd, then that's not good enough...
It means again, we were poor in the league, and are just not ready for Champs league football.
The bar doesn't get lowered, we are not Arsenal.
4 place trophy is a fallacy and a made up one from wenger, which the media and the like put emphasis on to tell a story.
Priority should be the Prem. Lets go all out and die hard for the title, everything else will follow....
if we fall just short, don't win anything, at least we tried and Jose can stay in the job.

We could lower our standards like the likes of Liverpool / Arsenal / Tottenham have over the years and aim for Champions League football by finishing in the top 4
OR
We could set our sights on the title like Chelsea and Manchester City.
The longer we stay out of this, the longer our title drought will last. Nobody expected the likes of Arsenal / Liverpool to go decade(s) without winning the title. We will be in the same category if we don't get ourselves together.
We have the money to buy the title back.

If he serves up the same crap from last season with little or no improvement, he needs to be moved on.
Then a comprehensive review of our vision for the club needs to be undertaken and a young manager like Pochettino should be given the job and time

Maybe you should. Since those clubs were nowhere near the league the first objective is to consolidate with CL football in order to stop players leaving and to entice better players in.
Since you are nowhere near the league you should be doing the same otherwise it's going to be another disappointing season. This time you won't have an easy run to winning the Europa league to make it just about acceptable. Unless of course you go out in third place, although I suspect your easy run to be a one off and nobody to get that lucky again.

Easy run.. ?!... you think we were playing teams like Sutton or Lincoln?
Sure you wanna take the shine off a European trophy that Liverpool, anFailed

Don't get me wrong, you can only beat those in front of you but it was an easy run in comparison to other seasons. You only have to look at the previous season when Liverpool had Dortmund, United and the previous champions three times in a row Sevilla. The way you played against those teams wasn't great so I don't think you would have beaten say Dortmund or Sevilla but again that's irrelevant as you can only beat what's in front of you.
I also don't think there's any way to take the shine of a European trophy, it goes into the history books no matter who you played. My point is I relation to the expectations of this season. I can't see why United should have a minimum of the league title whilst the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool are settling for top four, as somebody suggested, considering they all finished above you and looked like better teams.

If only we'd have got Wolves at home in the FA cup.
