The Footballs Back

God I've missed it, what with Celtics games not on TV I ended up watching the second half of the Dundee derby for my fix.

Looking at Celtics business for the window and the shape of the squad I am a little concerned we don't have sufficient cover in defence or up front, that third striker option left us looking a little bit toothless. Forrest came up with the goods on Wednesday but I don't see that working for us going forward with his somewhat erratic performances over the course of the season.

Ntcham from what little I've seen and heard of him seems like a confident player wanting to get on the ball and make things happen. We do need that physical presence in midfield with a guy who's prepared to make a tackle. We really do need someone who can take on the mantle of Scott Brown and dominate the midfield as he isn't getting any younger. Perhaps Kouassi could be that man, I hope we see a lot more of him this season and that Brendan has done a "Boyata" in holding him back until he gets his game up to speed.

Jonny Hayes strikes me as being a good squad option and I admit that I had hoped we would invest in another winger so that we could rotate the squad for Europe. He will certainly do a good job in the SPL although I'm not convinced he is good enough for European football. I would love to be proven wrong on that count.

Eric Sviatchenko does not convince me as a partner for Jozo Simunovic at the back, I would like to see us go into the market for a Centre back as the idea of Bitton deputising there in Kazakhstan gives me the fear. From what I remember of Astana they were a big physical side who threatened from set pieces. We need defenders who can stand up to that threat and Bitton or Sviatchenko don't cut it for me.

Rangers in my eyes will be a lot stronger this year- I am not convinced by Caixinha's tactical ability but he has brought in some guys who will add a bit of steel to their first team. We had such a lot of success through bullying and putting them under pressure high up the park last year. I think Dorrans is a good footballer and Alves will at the very least not be physically intimidated in the way that Rob Kiernan was last year. Ryan Jack is a proper holding midfielder so he will also be an immediate upgrade on Halliday.

The big question mark for me about Rangers is their ability to score goals, Herrera and Morelos are wildcards so we'll have to see what they offer. What I enjoyed about watching us play Rangers last year was that (except for one occasion) when we scored it seemed to make the Rangers team wilt under the pressure.

I'm just glad the football is back

Mags, like you, I am fortunate enough to have seen Jinky many many times. At his best he was a world beater. At his worst he took a lot of flak from the Bhoys in the jungle. I'm not saying Paddy is at the same level as Jinky, I'm drawing parallels with the type of player he is and how he can do things that others cannot. BR knows this and that is why he's not given up on signing him as as 'special' player.

I know exactly what you mean mate. Was just joshing.

The wee man had some periods of bad form...but they were usually linked to off field problems.
