He wasn't a very good player at international level. Very good players perform in major tournaments, not against poor team in qualifying.

Not his fault, he scored more goals per game than Rooney. Maybe we would have got past the quarter finals with better coaches

i realise that is unlikely to be the motivation, or reason, behind mr rooney's statement, but silver linings and small victories etc.
