Villa V Forest Match Thread

Forest travel to Aston Villa for a 5:30pm kick of in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Villa have not lost now in five [league] games and after their last away victory against Barnsley [0-3], the chunky one is looking to build momentum by taking the game to and all the points from Forest.

Henri Lansbury picked up a knee injury and had to be substituted during the midweek loss to Middlesborough.

Patrick Bamford scored twice as Middlesbrough beat 10-man Aston Villa to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The forward netted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Tommy Elphick, who was shown a second yellow card.

Bamford, who hit the crossbar with a header in the first half, nodded in his second with 23 minutes remaining.

Villa defender Elphick earlier had an effort of his own ruled out.

Jake Doyle-Hayes shot, comfortably saved by Boro goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos, was one of Villa's best efforts.

It was the third time in the past four games that Steve Bruce's side have failed to score.

Jonathan Kodjia is back.

For all the signings that Aston Villa have made since dropping to the Sky Bet Championship, it looks like 19-year-old academy graduate Keinan Davis could be set to cause the biggest stir this season.

There is often discussion about the attitude of youngsters trying to make it in the game these days, but team-mate Jonathan Kodjia is a big fan of his attitude.

"I like his football game," said Kodjia. "He is very, very strong. He has pace. He knows how to score goals. He is a quiet boy in the dressing room and he tries his best every day in training. You can tell he loves being a professional footballer and wants to make it count."

The 19-year-old scored his first goal for the club in a man-of-the-match display at Barnsley last week. He has now started Villa's last five league games and he could already take some removing from the starting XI.

Mark Warburton will have had to earn his corn, getting the team to put the Chelsea result behind them and build self belief into the players to take on Villa.

I expect [ along with most others] to see Murphy and McKay restored to the starting line up. Smith in goal, Darwika and Traore at wingback and Bridcutt to shield the defence. Mills and Mancienne at centre half according to Tails anyway.

It will depend on which day, Tuesday or Wednesday, that Barca play their Champions League game against Olympiakos. If they play Wednesday, then the Malaga game will be on Sunday...

I'll start lobbying UEFA then!

Mills gets badly dragged out of position for 1st goal. Someone should have covered him really and Darikwa just left his marker. 2nd goal was poor from Smith but also a good free kick. Think we played some good stuff in that 2nd half so it's a shame we didn't get a point.

I don’t claim to be a tactical genius, but playing Brereton out wide is not working at all, in fact it’s almost like playing with 10 men, and if you are going to take a yellow for the team, don’t do it in shooting distance. Don’t get me wrong I am not having a go at B.B. but playing him in this position makes as much sense as playing Grant Holt out wide about a decade ago. We may have deserved a point today, but ultimately goals win games and results keep a manager in his post. At the moment we concede far too easily far too regularly, and eventually something will have to give. I don’t think we are to far away from being a competent side but unless results pick up MW will come under pressure, especially with the Derby coming up soon. The next 3 games are extremely difficult so a return of 4 or 5 points would be massive.

Yep, the BB conundrum is going to start to dominate proceedings too much. I feel if Ward were available he would be getting the nod. BB should be upfront where his attributes work. He shouldn't be tracking back.

We are definitely much stronger down the left side than the right, some of the inter play between McKay, Dowell and Traore is very exciting.

For me, biggest problem yesterday was a lack of urgency in the cm, there seemed little movement and options and this left our back stuck looking to move the ball forward, and eventually lead to forcing a pass and making errors.

Osborn made a difference when he came on, he move the ball quicker and with more accuracy. And we started to break lines and push on to their defence with options, thus leading to us creating more chaces.

I wouldn't play Bouch and Bridcutt together unless we have no other options, hopefully a fit Vaughan or Osborn will hold the position.

In the summer a few fans questioned why we wanted another cm, and were chasing the Hibs lad so hard. But yesterday it was clear why.

We are making silly mistakes that is costing us points but I am confident if we can get the right player in the cm who can help move the ball in it quicker and push our possession up the field then a lot of the errors will dry up.

Reddave is absolutely right - Ben Brereton has spent about five years in the academy learning the striker's role, and he does it very well. But now we are asking him to play in midfield. He can't do it; he hasn't been shown how.

Playing darikwa, dowell, Osborn, cummings, carayol (be it maybe with some poor crosses), maybe even Walker at RW would be better right now than denting the lads confidence in a position the world knows he's struggling in.

I hope MW sees how effective dowell was there against villa and plays Osborn in the centre against Fulham as otherwise, we're playing with 10, play everything down the left, and we're easy to set up against.

If we had either cash or ward we wouldn't be talking about this, but that's just how it is. They shouldn't be too far off recovery by now.

Think everyone should be back in training tomorrow other than Cohen.

I agree that many fans are worried that continually playing BB in that unfamiliar position will dent his confidence. Yes, you should be flexible to the needs of the team, but the upshot is there are others in the squad that can play that position and have shown it.
