Henderson and Dier

Yes its another England rant. As usual, its another uninspiring one, just like this midfield pairing.

Not to say these 2 are bad players, but these two should not be based at the heart of the England midfield at home to a team of much lower quality, will sit with 10/11 men behind the ball and be compact. They don't have his ability to break through and unfortunately, things don't just "happen" in football because of quality nowadays. I know England aren't blessed with quality midfielders that can quote on quote "pick a pass" from a deep area, like a Carrick for example. But there has to be another way around it.

There are some midfielders outside this squad and team in tonight's match that could do a decent job. But do England really have many goal scoring midfielders to choose from? There is Alli, but other than that, a little bit shallow. Barkley could notch a decent figure a couple of seasons ago, but doesn't get any chance nowadays. All the rest, they don't really. Players like Henderson and Dier maybe grab the odd goal or two every season and even one's outside the squad like James Ward-Prowse, Jonjo Shelvey and even Livermore on the bench, they are the same. 10 years ago, England had Gerrard and Lampard at the base of that midfield who were hitting 10-15 goals at minimum every season each, but not now. England need a better midfield force.

4-3-3 (from midfield):

----------------------Henderson/Dier---------------------
-------------Alli---------------------------CM----------------
---Sterling------------------------------------Rashford---
----------------------------Kane---------------------------

Use Kane as the focal point up top to work off and to link with. Have Alli and that CM the squad is currently missing to break beyond the midfield. They have to run through the lines of midfield and defence and run beyond Kane. Sterling can use his pace to get in behind the full back and Rashford can come inside from that left channel, just like tonight and drive at defenders. If you can have 3/4 players running beyond your striker, then that will cause teams problems. But tonight, England are happy to have Henderson and Dier holding the ball, little movement and having everything played in front of that Slovenia back 4. Its tedious. We don't need both Henderson and Dier, we just need 1 of them, particularly against a lower quality opposition at home.

I can understand the selection against a better side away from home when England will want to be compact and break, but not this game. I know people will say, "well who would you pick", but that's the problem with the shallow midfielder pool England have right now for this CM position. Unless somebody, like a Ward-Prowse could be developed this way for the national side. Thoughts?

God help us if we play Hends, Dier, Ox and Lallana in Russia.

Worst midfield in England history

Does Horrenderson rank below Carlton Palmer? For me, yes.

Hends, Dier + Ox v Palmer Batty Sinton. It's very close

We should play 3 at the back with two in midfield

I used to want this formation but don't think we have the midfielders to play this. Our defence is actually reasonably strong and reckon we need only 4 back there and overload midfield.

It is impossible to win anything with this group of players. Half of them are losers at club level let alone international level

It’s been impossible to win anything with any group of players since 1966. England have not been amongst the favourites since 1970, as far as I can work out.

After every game, we dust off our expertise and experience, and play the pretend-game of imagining England would be better if different players were picked, a different manager was appointed, a different formation was used.

But the end-result is always sheite.
At least they qualified this time. There’ve been a number of WCs and Euros where they didn’t even manage that.

The performance v Iceland was even worse than before, if that was possible.

Rose Alli etc were so bad. Think Dier and Sterling were so bad, they even got hooked at halftime

Dier and Walker were good, only 2 I remember.

But he did get taken off early on cos we were losing, if I remember correctly

With 2 in midfield and 3 at the back just need legs in midfield which England can provide, gets beat out of our strong wingbacks and forwards/wingers. My issue would be who plays LCB (Stones RCB, Dier/Maguire CB) and who would play next to Henderson in midfield.
