Australia vs England vs NZ T20 Tri Series

Tri series kicks off tomorrow, England are warming up today against a PM XI. NZ have obviously just had an ODI and T20 series with Pakistan which they won 5-0 in the ODI and after winning the first T20, lost 2-1 in that series. Australian players have had ODIs and BBL to prepare for this so it should be a good competitive series. Australia are seen as the underdogs though but have good enough players to be able to win.

Squads for the series;

England squad: Jake Ball, Sam Billings (wk), Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan (capt), Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Mark Wood.

Australia squad: Ashton Agar, Alex Carey (wk), Ben Dwarshuis, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, David Warner (capt), Adam Zampa.

NZ squad: Tom Blundell (wk), Trent Boult, Tom Bruce, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Anaru Kitchen, Colin Munro, Seth Rance, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Ben Wheeler, Kane Williamson (capt).

Fixtures below, first half of the series is in Australia before the move over to NZ fort he second half of the series and the final. With that in mind, I'd make NZ slight favourites and the fact that they're the number 2 team in the world in this format with England 4th and Australia 7th. Obviously it can be a bit of a lottery but I'd be surprised if it wasn't an England vs NZ final.

First T20: Australia v New Zealand, Saturday, February 3, 7.20pm AEDT, Sydney

Second T20: Australia v England, Wednesday, February 7, 7.40pm AEDT, Hobart

Third T20: Australia v England, Saturday, February 10, 7. 20pm AEDT, Melbourne

Fourth T20: New Zealand v England, February 13, 5.00pm AEDT, Wellington (Fox Sports)

Fifth T20: New Zealand v Australia, February 16, 5.00pm AEDT, Auckland (Fox Sports)

Sixth T20: New Zealand v England, February 18, 5.00pm AEDT, Hamilton (Fox Sports)

Morgan needed that knock to be honest, agree with Buttler, I rate him but he's struggled at times with the white ball down under.

I like Malan, top class batsman

Buttler is more your icing on the cake type of player. When England really need him he doesn't deliver.

Craig Overton has been called up to the ODI squad to replace the injured Plunkett.

Nonsense. Buttler has delivered for England and his highest scores usually come when we're struggling to set a decent target. He's won 8 man of the match awards in 104 ODIs and that's not going to be down to what he did behind the stumps.

He's not going to score consistently like Root does but he's got the ability and the nerve to score quickly at the end of an innings against death ball bowling.

Alex Hales has disappointed me, Jason Roy has been in and out, reminds me of Warners form

I would open with butler in the T20 side. Drop Hales been poor. Root, stokes, woakes and moeen will strengthen the side.

So Hales follows in Rashid's footsteps. After Rashid announced he would only play white ball cricket in 2018, Hales has signed a deal with Notts to only play white ball cricket until the end of the 2019 season. It wouldn't surprise me if a few more follow suit; Morgan, Buttler and Plunkett wouldn't be huge surprises.

Hales wont be a massive loss. he doesn't have the ability to play test cricket so no point playing domestic first class. and I think with Rashid not really in the picture test wise.. (think they will stick with Moeen for the summer) so he may as well play odi as well.

Whilst Hales nor Rashid will be huge losses for the England test side, though some made claims for both to be included. I think it's disappointing that they won't be playing first class cricket. They're still decent players and shouldn't really be closing the door / having the door closed on their test careers.

It's also better for the county game to have top players playing. Whilst there isn't that much appetite for first class cricket in comparison to the limited overs stuff if you look at attendances etc, decisions like this just bury it further. They should be looking at ways to improve it and I don't see how this does.
