I was having a chat with a Man Utd fan at work today and we got chatting about the crazy transfers in recent times.
From memory I think it was firstly Pogba's fee and then bloody Jordan Pickford's transfer to Everton that kicked off the silly money transfers in very recent times.
We've had many articles on the subject of squad value before however not recently since this shift in transfer fees, so it got me thinking...
Not thinking with your heart and removing those rose tinted glasses we wear as fans, what are the realistic fees our players could fetch in today's market?
Imagine if you were a team looking in from the outside and wanting to buy our players... what to you think you would be quoted?
take into account contract situations, injury records etc etc
Lloris - £35m
Trippier - £20m
Aurier - £30m
Alderweireld - £35m (recent injuries & absence from XI, plus contract)
Vertonghen - £45m
Sanchez - £50m
Foyth - £15m
Rose - £50m (a matter of time before he is back to his best)
Davies - £20m
Dier - £30m
Dembele - £30m (needs to prove he is over hip problems for good)
Wanyama - £25m (See above re recent injury &slow re-integration into XI
Winks - £15m
Alli - £80m
Eriksen - £90m (I actually think he's worth more but don't think he has as much 'brand appeal' as a Brazilian like Coutinho had which I think marks him down. However this is good for us as it will hopefully keep vultures at bay)!
Lamela - £25m
Sissoko - £15m
Lucas - too early to tell... maybe £35m?
Son - £40m
Kane £150m (surely more though...right)?!

Why's it nonsense? You don't base player valuations on how much similar players have sold for. Barcelona bought Dembele for £120m because they were desparate, Dortmund didn't need to sell and he had a couple of years left on his contract. Dembele is a good player with a lot of potential but if you were basing other players valuation on that transfer, then there would be a lot of players going for £120m+ but that's not how it works.
VVD was the guy klopp wanted, is 26, had 4 years left on his contract and Southampton clearly added on an extra £10-15m for the tapping up. Compare that with Vertonghen, who I agree is currently the better player, but he's 30 and his contract runs out in 2019. If you hypothetically sold him in the summer, you're not going to get £75m for him in those circumstances.

Comparison is the basis of most valuation in most areas. Its the starting point from which you make adjustments to reflect differences and circumstances.
How you value circumstances, in particular, is a bit of an unknown science. How do you put a value on "the manager really wanting a player"
But all other things being equal, if 2 players are of the same quality and age then they will be worth the same....who's buying, who's desperate, who has money to burn, the attitude of the selling club, contract, age etc all then adjust the value.

Trippier - £10m- Bang average right back
Aurier - £10m- Fraud of a player, could get 10 mill abroad
Alderweireld - £100m- Underrated arguably best centre back in europe
Foyth - £2m- Kid only plays cos ossie signed him great on the ball but is very poor defensively
Davies - £30m- underated
Dier - £50m - underrated criminally by all spurs fans
Dembele - £20m (hip and hype)
Winks - £25m-underrated
Lamela - £15m (shell of his former self)
Sissoko - should be released with immiediate effect

Your last paragraph is my point though as that's what I was getting at, that external factors and situations will invariably alter and effect the value of any player. Just because player X is better than player Y, it doesn't mean they'll be valued higher like sandy originally suggested.

LLM really is a very poor poster now on football related topics. I thought he was the poster who used to be in the know? How can he say Aurier is a fraud and Dembele is massively overrated? Foyth, who has been really good in his cameo cup appearances according to LLM is ready for the scrapeheap.
