Jose in?

So when we signed Jose I felt there was a 50/50 split between fans who wanted him and those who didn't.

It is my perception this has changed over the last 20 months. If you are still in the Jose in camp can you please help me try to understand why.

Assuming we get top four he gets another season for me.

Add to that the FA Cup and it'll have been a pretty positive season on the whole even if the football hasn't been great at times.

Next season though, for me, he has to:

a) Win the league or CL by hook or by crook or
b) Challenge for the league playing more expansive football (doesn't have to be stupidly gung-ho)

If he can't do either of those (both would be great in terms of winning and great football) then I think after year 3 we will have a decision to make.

I've said it before though but it would be ironic if Jose is the manager who steadies the ship and leaves a good squad for the next man rather than the one who benefits from his own work as he's done elsewhere.

Do we really want to waste another season with Mourinho?

Come on man, he'll never play attractive football.

This guy comes to a club like utd and thinks it's ok to play cautious defensive anti football? What makes you think he will change next year?

He'll just have better counter attack merchants for his dire style, but the game has moved on this team is a far cry from the mourinho teams in the past who can shut up shop after nicking a goal

I don't think there's anyone available for United who wouldn't be a massive risk so I don't see a plentiful list either.

I'm pretty certain that we could have a lot of managers in who could get us playing better football than now but could they manage the egos and manage such a huge club. I'm not so sure.

Lurker.

As long as there is progression then I'm happy enough in keeping Jose but, for me, we do have to see the improvements I've noted above.

I do want to see better football on a more consistent basis but am not sure who'd be able to deliver that. I'm happy to be pointed in that direction though.

There are two good reasons.

1) We can’t just keep sacking managers every season or two. Someone is going to have to get time.
2) There are no obvious replacements. Mourinho has pedigree. Hire a promising outlier and risk another Moyes.

We could still finish a comfortable second, behind a side who’ve brushed everyone aside this season, and even win the FA Cup. Hardly time for sacking managers.

That said, performances need to improve. No arguments about that.

I I like that you give me reasons even if I don't agree with them
my rebottle to your reasons are
1)actually we can and should unless manager is heading in the direction we want as a club. This is not 1986.

2) There are plenty of replacements that I feel fulfill the three things that I consider the utd way. Attacking football, youth and success. Succes is a push but relative success is good enough for me.

We could still finish 2nd is probably what I will say if I was Jose agent/defence lawyer and his best argument. But for me finish 2nd for the next 20 yrs or however long pep chooses to manage city for is the best we can hope for with Jose as manager, while enduring terribble football. Is that good enough for you or am I being too pessimistic
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can we have this plentiful list of potential replacements please?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
there are plenty
many I have not seen enough of to put my neck on the block for but there are 2 I will
Tuchel - who is my wet dream managerial signing
Carlo - is a safe managerial choice
and these 2 are not in contract tho I suspect for not much longer

you just made my point for me. If they have us playing better football I think we will be better.

is Jose managing the egos? The only players with ego at utd that need managing are: Pogba who he has supposedly fallen out with, and zlatan who he overplayed last season and both players were brought in by jose.

There are a fair few teams in the PL who play better football but only City are above us. Pretty football isn't the be all and end all of things IMO.

I do think it's a massive job at United as well. There will be egos there and you have to be big enough to make decisions. Moyes was a decent club manager before coming to OT but United overwhelmed him.

No saying inexperience couldn't work but United will also want a safe pair of hands in terms of CL qualification too.

Wont be sorry to see him go when it happens

That shambles tonight was more of the same that was served up in last season's Europa campaign

Didn't get away with it tonight

the 2 I mentioned have managed some of the best players in the world without a problem

as for second place, we are 5 points away from 4th place which is where I think we will ultimately finish and liverpool and spurs play infinitely better footbal than us with considerable less resources.

Imagine what they could do with more. Hope is the reason I watch football. What do you hope for when you watch a jose utd team?

If he finishes top 4, he'll get another season. But it seems like this is the best he can do.

He needs to change. He has become too cautious. We started both last season and this well, playing good football, though not great, a decent then we lose to City and we revert back to type. We complained about LVG due to his boring style and a lack of goals. We have players who can compliment each other, but that may mean certain signings may have to be dropped and would lead to people saying a mistake or few were made.

Sadly we knew what we were getting with Jose. I don't want him to fail as he's our manager. But it could be the first time he doesn't win the league with a team he has managed since before he won as Porto's manager.

The style of play is a big gripe for many. If you aren't winning things, you need to play well. Only chance of silverware is the FA Cup. I hope we win that and finish 2nd.
