Given how $hit Mercedes are when running behind competitive cars I'm not sure you can criticize too much. Was gaining a second a lap then gets within one second and suddenly can't get close to even attempt a move.

yup this, Bottas made a great start and got past Kimi, then did well to keep up with (in Quali at least) was faster car. He did what he had to as you said on average a second a lap faster than Vettel but as soon as you get 1.5 secs behind the car in front and you push you just destroy the tyres and brakes.

The sport just now in terms of pushing hard, overtaking and producing wheel to wheel racing is by a country mile at its worst. I still am a huge fan of the sport and always will be. But in terms of close racing its pretty rotten lets be honest. Think you get more overtakes during rallies !!

Merc should have taken the win as Aussie, Merc have always had problems getting the tyres to work at Bahrain. The Merc is still the quicket car in the field and still Hamiltons to lose IMO.

It's annoying me now, can't really call it racing if you can't run effectively behind a rival car.

I thought Bottas was pretty feeble going into the last lap, to be honest. But when I saw it again I thought just what Martin Brundle said, "He came from further back than I first thought".

Watching it again, I'm not sure if it was a different camera angle, he was not actually that close to Vettel on the turn in.

I also think Mercedes had run the entire stint a little subdued to ensure their tyres lasted and as such had got locked into "under-performing syndrome". As Toto Wolff said, "Benefit of hindsight we could have run harder".

I'm hoping they will be luckier/better in China this week end.

I will add this though, sitting on my settee, I overtook Vettel easily!
