Santi

Read a lot of comments re who we think should be moving on,when new manager is here, but seen nothing to say what it is felt will happen with Santi.
Much as I love the guy,can you see a new manager keeping him on,when it looks very doubtful that he will be able to play again?

Did not say I want to keep him, only what will new manager do with him, seem to remember that AW was rumored to have offered him an extension to his contract.

Still doubts whether he'll ever play again. But I'd imagine he'll be given every chance

As excellent of a player he was, we can’t keep him. It’s just a waste of wages. I doubt he’ll play near the level he was before. If he is to continue his career, he’d be better off doing it in a less demanding league. Such a shame, we’ve massively missed him. Our midfield hasn’t been the same since he was out. Unbelievable we’ve never made attempts to replace him, especially as he was such an important player

When you look at every player we have had who had a major injury and year or more out, every one has taken 2 years or more to get back to good form. Santi is already 33 and is not back yet, so he would be 35/36 when he gets back to top form on these timescales. He should retire and spend quality time with his family imo.

One of wengers best signings in the last 7-8 years and one of the best midfield players we have had

He needs to retire

None of us really know though. Maybe medical staff might be confident he can play again. But from just a football perspective with the amount of football he’s missed, he’ll be very out of practice. It’ll be best part of a season as he’s eased back in. So at very best scenario he won’t be at the required level until end of next season or beginning of the one after. Then with his age he can only expect to have one more season before retiring. So from our perspective I just don’t see it worth paying him wages when we could invest that in someone else who can play for the foreseeable future

If I was him and if I was cleared from a medical perspective, I’d be looking to play somewhere like America, where it’s physically less demanding with less risk of agrivating the injury. Id like to see him play somewhere again, but it’s very unrealistic to expect him to play at a prem level again ,

No reason why he should retire unless he wants to. Some, in fact many players (by various accounts) love playing and essentially get depressed when they retire!

He's slightly experienced that feeling over the last few years as it is so who knows what he'd like to do next

He probably shouldn't however stay on with Arsenal, unless he'd take a pay as you play only deal.

Cazorla's career is clearly over. At worst, he could play for his hometown team in Spain till he retires. Not even Maradonna could miss 2 years of football in his 30's and come back to any decent level.

I prioritize a replacement for Cazorla above any signing in any other position apart from CB.

Xhaka is being used as Cazorla's replacement. That is a major factor in us sitting in 6th place with Wenger saying the priority in the league is to stay above Burnley. We definitely need a new CM. With Kos injuries seemingly catching up with him we need to look at more cover. I would even consider Holding or Chambers if it means we get a better CM.

Santi was the heart of the team making things flow better, Xhaka is a blocked artery using that metaphor.
