Third of the eleven

Sad to see Ray Wilson has died, great defender apparently.
Long battle with Alzheimer's disease it has been reported.

Another England World Cup winner passes away!

Ray Wilson was imo a classic full back, a player other full backs of the time looked upon as the model to copy, not a flashy player but very sound and reliable, a good passer and tackler, could cross the ball...a very good temperament, a team player.

From a Leeds POV I thought Terry Cooper was very much like him in type and style of play, I wonder if Terry inspired him?
Again from a Leeds angle I thought Gary Kelly was a throwback to Paul Reaney in style, though Reaney was more aggressive, both very athletic.

Sterland and Dorigo I think were more attacking in style capable of scoring than the above.

Frank Gray was a classic type of full back when he played there, as was Paul Madeley in his time when Cooper was injured.

RIP Ray Wilson

"Although at 31 Wilson was the oldest member of the 1966 World Cup squad, he continued to hold off younger challengers for his England place until 1968, when he was still first choice and ever-present in his position at the European Championship in Italy as England finished in third place. However, the third-place play-off match against the USSR in that tournament proved to be Wilson’s last appearance for England, as an increasingly troublesome knee and the emergence of the young Leeds United full-back Terry Cooper combined to bring the curtain down on his international career.

Correction: should read "l wonder if Ray Wilson inspired Cooper?"

Yes JLA that clarifies the situation with Wilson and Cooper and England.

why he and other World Cup winners weren't knighted is a national disgrace.....the whole squad should have been recognised with the ultimate accolade not just the chosen few
