World Cup VAR

Gonna be a right old $hitshow isn't it?

Its already been seen to be quite messy as it gets rolled out in leagues around the world, especially where its a new technology for some refs to adapt to. Hopefully over time the speed, efficiency and communication are greatly improved, but given that its still all over the place in, for example, MLS, where it's been active for a couple of seasons, i doubt it. Refs here continue to get decisions badly wrong, even with VAR.

It leads me to think it could really taint this summers WC. I don't understand why FIFA is so hasty to introduce it.

We have only 5 of the 36 referees at the World Cup who have experienced VAR in a live competitive match. Likewise, it seems only 7 of the Assistant Refs have been involved. That's worrying.

Now we hear that there will be in-game retrospective red cards for incidents. The VAR ref can review incidents no matter how much time has passed, even when play has moved on, other fouls have been committed, goals scored, players subbed etc, and advise the ref to send someone off.

There is no need for the ref to have made one of these 'clear and obvious errors" rather a VAR and his team of 3 Assistant VARs will be watching the action through more than 30 cameras and if they pick up on something from any time earlier they can look tom halt the match and review it.

Like I said...a $hitshow is brewing.

Feck me.

I'm gonna have to leave this again as whilst funny, I feel like I'm banging my head off a brick wall.

Handball does not have to be deliberate in a literal sense. Unnatural position of the arm is taken into account, like today when the player had his back to the ball so couldn't deliberately handle it. He made himself bigger and put the attacker at a disadvantage.

The article you posted and the quotes I posted earlier, from the same article states that referees have been told this.

If you take for example all the handballs given in the PL last season, you'll find that very few were actually dileberate handball but in fact given due to the unnatural position of the arm or due to the arm going towards the ball.

Go have a look at the incidents and you'll see this.

Good luck.

‘Puts the attacker at a disadvantage’

‘Doesn’t have to be deliberate in a literal sense’

These are just incorrect phrases you’re making up. They’re completely and utterly wrong.

If you put your arm in an unnatural position as it’s more likely to affect the ball, you’ve deliberately handled the ball. Literally.

This means you’re wrong and I am right.

It is yet another example of you making things up in your head and then not being able to see past them. You’re so stupid it’s beyond belief.

Here are my top ten absolute howlers from TOOR on this thread. Not in any order, as they're all is laughable as each other.

And the funny thing is, he still doesn't understand why any of these are wrong.

1.

Clear and obvious error only becomes a clear and obvious error in a subjective handball, if your opinion is that it's handball.

Whether a clear and obvious error has occurred when speaking about most things apart from standard offsides, will depend on whether the VAR agrees with the referee.

2.

If the player brought his hand towards the ball, as per the rules, it is defined as intentional and therefore it should be a penalty. The referee thought he didn't bring his hand to the ball, which was a mistake. It's not about interpretation. Like binary, 1 or 0. Did the player bring his hand towards the ball, it's a 1. Did he not, it's a 0. No interpretation.

3.

it's open to interpretation on whether you believe his arm was in an unnatural position and therefore he gained an advantage.

4.

You're going for the black and white intentional/unintentional when in actual fact you can unintentionally handle the ball and be punished

5.

His arm had no reason to be there and because it was there, he gained an advantage. For me, and the officials, that's a penalty.

Where your arms are is the main one. Any referee will state that.

6.

I stated that I, as well as the officials decided it was a penalty due to the unnatural position on the players arms and that position gaining an advantage.

7.

One is about the arm going towards the ball and making contact, which is a penalty, no ifs or buts as per the actual handball law.

Either he did move his hand towards the ball, or he didn't.

8.

You can still get a penalty against you if it's not deliberate, using the criteria the referees are told to look for.

Once again, you can be punished whether you meant to handle the ball or not, based on this.

9.

The player gained an advantage by making himself bigger, despite obviously not deliberately handling the ball, since he couldn't see where the ball was.
10.

He made himself bigger and put the attacker at a disadvantage.

I might filter Winston and toor just so they can't comment on this thread anymore.

No worries - if you'd like me to stop commenting then I will.. just let me know.

I'm happy to continue because you know I enjoy these things, but will respect what you ask for.

Re: the filtering above - the 'question' he asked was just a childish insult and I'd rather discuss football matters on here than respond to someone who uses the forum as a keyboard warrior.

TOOR has many faults, but at least he actually discusses football.

Back to the main topic.

VAR despite needing obvious refinements has enhanced this competition imo. I've always been an advocate of embracing the modern technology available to help the officials and have seen nothing in this tournament to change my mind.

It certainly hasn't been a shietshow as suggested in the OP.
