Vardy has to start in the WC

Or at the very, very least be brought on after an hour.

Composure under pressure could make all the difference in what is the biggest tournament in football, Vardy's big game record is absolutely insane and arguably the best in England since Drogba's left. He delivered the goods in the PL and CL for Leicester and was the one who stood up vs Wales in Euro 16 when most of the squad froze.

You just can't put a price on such big game pedigree and if England change the habit of a lifetime and beat a big nation, it's hard to imagine a massive moment from JV not being in there.

That's not to say he should replace Kane, he obviously shouldn't, but we need to find an important role for Vardy one way or another.

We do need Kane & Sterling to score desperately against Tunisia though. Will help squad belief so much.

Now that Kane's been made captain (and fair dues, giving it to our best player), it's all the more important that he scored early. As has been said above, England can't afford for him to have a few barren games like he can do in August. And being captain it becomes more of an issue to drop him to the bench and let someone else have a go.

There is another possibility in all of this. We have a Tunisian defender on our books by the name of Yohan Benalouane. I believe he has gone to the World Cup. He has... let's say... an interesting tackle in him. And a high boot. As in a very high boot. As in I can't quite believe he doesn't get sent off most times he plays. If he is picked and gets one of those wrong in the first ten minutes then we could need someone to replace Kane while the England medical team try to stitch his head back on.

I actually think of all strikers Vardy is the best suited for the WC.

I’m a Leicester fan and a big Vardy fan and I think there are a lot of misconceptions about Vardy and what he represents. His technique and ability is often underrated alongside his more obvious abilities of speed and work-rate. Under Puel Leicester have not been playing to Vardy’s strengths and he’s been largely isolated. He has, however, continued to score on a regular basis.

Do I think he should start for England? No.
Kane is clearly the number one striker and the team should be being set up to service him. He offers more different outlets to Vardy and will fit better into the shape and system that England play. The other factor is that Vardy is essentially an alternative to Kane. Contrary to what people might assume he’s never impressed as a wide player, or as a wide striker and is not cut out to be a no.10. You’d probably have to ask Kane to play as the withdrawn striker if you wanted them to play together, which obviously isn’t optimum in terms of getting the best from Kane.

Personally I’d have played Kane - with Rashford and Sterling either side and Alli or Lingard as the attacking midfielder or no. 10. Vardy is a good option against the better teams as he disrupts possession and also pulls them out of shape. I’d also like to see Vardy used when we are leading games as the opposing team will have to come forward and play a high line. In those situations Vardy will make them think again and subsequently help protect a lead.

With those players playing you're either not playing 3 at the back or not having a holding midfielder.

Correct 4-2-3-1.

I don't expect vardy to get more than 15 mins in total.

Kane will start.
Rsshford will play alongside him if sterling is missing.
Welbeck has a decent record at international level.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vardy should be ahead of Rashford in the pecking order, especially vs Belgium and if we get to the latter stages.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not convinced by that to be honest. His game is incredibly limited. He thrives in a direct Leicester team that is geared up to direct early passes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"direct Leicester team"??? no mate... more like possession tippy tappy crap now under Puel
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So not direct for all 4 months that Puel has been there. And I've still seen countless goals come from balls over the top.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you even watch Leicester? Where are these countless goals from balls over the top on the last 4 months? Or are you thinking of the goal of the season Vardy scored against West Brom and thinking that’s how he scored all 20 goals?

Mug
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes or no. Vardy is most effective when the team is set up to be more direct?
Yes or no, during Puels time he is largely on the periphery of games due to the style of football not suiting him?

Ffs, there was an article on the Leicester board not long ago saying exactly the same thing that you all agreed with
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree with all of that - but you're talking about countless goals over the last 4 months coming from balls over the top. Thats what I'm disputing. That just hasn't happened.

A thread with over 100 posts all with reasonable debate. Nice.

Some good evidence put forward as to why Vardy is a better player than some think, and some good arguments put forward as to why he won’t start.

I think that’s the general consensus.

What we really need to see is Sterling and Kane turn up. I’m pretty sure Sterling won’t.

It’s a sad state of affairs for England when Sane can’t even make the Germany squad, whereas Sterling is perceived as one of our best players!

Oh well, Leicester won the league with players inferior to those that finished below them....

Mersey spot on an actual good debate for once.

As I stated earlier it's good that we have 3 players who are coming off 20 goal seasons, lets hope we can outgun most teams.

I'd love to see Vardy and Kane play consistently together up front for England. Kane easily the best English qualified striker in the prem. Vardy 20 goal a season striker for Leicester. Just want Kane to be in the penalty area for corners, not taking them as in Euro 2016.
Lets hope Jamie Vardy has a party at the world cup after England do well in it, before our usual exit to Germany on pens. At least the vodka should be in plentiful sup[ly in Russia ( pun on Leicesters chant for Vardy.
