VAR and Penalties

Do you guys think with VAR too many penalties happen?

We’ve seen six pens already this World Cup, and it’s only day 3!

Or is it that the refs normally bottle it.

I’m sure soon keepers will be judged on how well they can save a pen too.

Blatant pen missed for Argentina today

It wasn’t blatant though, even Clatenberg said the attacker initiated contact and it wasn’t a pen.

I mean the one that wasn’t given

Wonder if delli alli will risk it his usual antics knowing var might see through his gamesmanship? Kane and sterling to a lesser degree too.

Bet on Croatia to score pen and win and over 10 corners just before KO. 10/1

Was convinced I'd see a pen.

In training Vardy was taking the "how to dive and get away with it " session

If it means we get to the correct conclusion of the decision, then yes I think we will see more. Nobody likes to lose out on a blatant penalty that was missed by the referee, but I suppose on the flip side, the opposition wouldn't want to lose to a penalty given by VAR either really.

At the end of the day, it will still cause controversy about whether it was/wasn't a penalty, ala in France's case yesterday. But as long as the correct decision is made, then I can't see no other argument imo.

No refs bottle penalty decision all the time in reality most games should have 3 or 4 penalties in every match, a penalty is judged on a very different standard and it's not based on the rules of the game as freekicks are given regularly and how often have we heard the old "it'd be given outside the box"

I have no issue with more penalties being given in a game refs are just scared, and I am sure refs used to be able to give an indirect freekick in the box for certain types of challenges but that must have changed as I have not seen one given in years... infact do indirect freekicks even exist anymore?

As VAR settles in the penalties will reduce as players realise getting away with it is improbable.

We should have a cleaner game with less stopages eventually.

It's only the same as when handling a player and holding shirts inside the box was then given as a penalty. I remember in the first 10 games of the PL season a couple of years ago, Stoke got pulled up for it and gave away so many penalties and so did Southampton. Nowadays, you don't see it as much anymore.

I don't think using VAR is quite the same. Handling somebody from set pieces was previously deployed as a tactic to defending/attacking set pieces. You don't "tactically" foul somebody in the box. VAR should be used in cases where if the referee has missed a decision, such as a penalty, then he should get a 2nd chance to look at it and make a decision. Although, I only think you should be allowed to use this decision 1/2 times per game, a bit like challenges in tennis. That way, you'll avoid potentially multiple penalties a game.
