Is it time for Stricter British Quotas?

Last 3 winners of World Cup; Spain, Germany & France all have something in common. They get more opportunities in their nation's top league. Obviously a lot will go on to move to the PL for the money and other reasons but not before making the grade in their own countries first.

Nobody can deny that some of the foreign imports have made what the PL is today. From likes of Cantona, Zola n Bergkamp all the way up to likes of Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez, Salah etc of today. However with the top quality foreign imports we've been flooded by very medicine ones too that haven't contributed any more than a home based player would have done.

The only stipulation for me would be to simply forget about using it for European competition games only as the other sides from other countries would have an advantage.

The PL wants the brand to be as good as it can be, I get that, but surely our national game must come into it a little bit. I don't want to pick on Chelsea here but I have no choice. Last season they fielded an entire foreign 11 on numerous occasions, once Cahill lost his place, whilst having a bunch out on loan.

What do we think? Something has to give surely.

We're insular because our National team doesn't do well - truly the most vicious of circles

Looking at a player like Loftus-Cheek, Danny Rose, Even Rashford tbh, all players who should be angling to find themselves at a club that can assure them starting spots in a team that can compete to win things, even if it as effing belgium.

Young players are coming through but tbh this insular attitude as to where to get your football training and growth in is what will hold England down at the end.

And now the tournament is over, can it be said that there might be a need to get a better manager than Southgate.

The money in England is bigger than pretty much anywhere else bar 3 clubs.

Money is still the biggest factor for most people when deciding where to work.

I'd like to see something in place. The idea that 8 home grown players should fill at least 3 or 4 of the starting eleven no longer rings true.

Clubs and fans must also take responsibility with the need for instant results.

I think we should either up that 8 to 12, or as mentioned have a quota of players in started 11.

But how many without detriment to the quality of product and driving prices for English players to astronomical levels?

Think the more you put the number up, the less the price of English players will go up. Would say the 'English tax' is a big problem as teams can get the same players from overseas for a fraction of the price, restricting opportunities.

If they were available at the same price we'd see a lot more English players in the league developing to a high level and maybe even going abroad.

As is it, the quota just makes a half decent English player unreasonably expensive

After Stoke got relegated (they're not really even Stoke anymore anyway), that was the last of the identity of the PL gone. The Championship is what the PL used to be. The PL is just a bunch of randomly assembled expensive foreigners who can change clubs every 5 minutes. There is no identity anymore. Close the league.

The identity was lost when Rooney left.

This argument doesn’t work for me. You have to produce quality players through the youth systems. England aren’t doing that enough. If players are good enough then they’ll get game time. It would definitely help if more English players played abroad as well, but for me, it’s the quality of players coming through at 16-21 that’s the problem.
