Manager Jose Mourinho retains the full backing of Manchester United's board despite Sunday's 3-2 Premier League defeat at Brighton.
The result and performance has attracted widespread criticism.
Mourinho is the favourite to be the next Premier League boss to leave his job, with suggestions that former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane is being considered as a potential replacement.
A United source said: "Why would we discuss Zidane when there is no job?"
Mourinho was disappointed by the failure to make more outfield signings during the summer transfer window beyond Brazil midfielder Fred and teenage full-back Diogo Dalot, who is injured.
He wanted additional cover in central defence and an alternative to Anthony Martial out wide.
However, in both instances, the United board felt there was no worthwhile signing available.

Yeah I guess it could, but it sounds like we are actively searching our DoF now, unless Woodward is also searching for the manager as well.

That’s what I don’t really get with this, seems incredibly dumb to me that Woodward extended Mourinhos contract when he did.

Many of us armchair observers were talking about the need for new structures to maintain the long-term thinking and replace the catastrophic loss in knowledge when Fergie and Gill left. Woodward can be forgiven his inexperience but it was his responsibility to mitigate that by brining in knowledge that he lacked. Three vastly different managers representing totally different projects speaks of very poor management. It's all very well saying that the commercial side continues to perform well but the owner's can't be delighted with inefficient spending (cutting into profitability) and erosion of brand value as the football stutters.
Mourinho's shortcomings are our immediate problem but Woodward and the senior management look very much like the fundamental issue.

Yes it was, even as someone who is willing to give Jose a bit more leeway than others the extension seemed completely unnessasry at the time and even worse now when he’s decided to not back him in the transfer market.

How has Manchester City in the 10 years they’ve been run by Mansour, managed to eclipse United in terms of how well they are run and their long term planning for players/management, whilst we have just gone backwards? Heads should seriously be rolling.

Exactly. Either you extend his contract, back him and if you are going to bring in a DoF, one in alignment with Mourinhos preferred style and way of working, or you run his contract down, hire a DoF with whatever you want longer term and start building towards that.

Essentially because we detached the business from the football side of things and hired accordingly. I’d actually argue we’ve done better on the business side as well, but that’s a different debate.

Nah I agree Melts, your revenues have soared the last few years and you aren’t far off United in total. You’ll probably eclipse us soon if we don’t sort ourselves out.

Also, when Woodward replaced Gill as vice chairman his role as commercial management director was taken over by Richard Arnold. So it would seem Woodward isn’t even responsible for our impressive commercial work over the past 5 years.

All gill did was lie for the glazers and make a few ok signings.

The Board and the Chief Executive have said nothing. They have made no new statement backing the manager, or otherwise.
The 'source' in this 'story' is unnamed and, regardless, is not quoted as making any statement backing the manager or otherwise.
Further, there is no evidence whatsoever - even suggested - supporting the assertion that Mourinho wanted the Board to sanction the acquisition of an alternative to Martial.
In short, the BBC article, this thread and all the comments above discussing the matter are based on an unsupported and valueless proposition, and have been a perfect waste of time.
Goodbye.
