DUFC 1 AAFC 1 (AAFC win on pens)

A youthful United team crashed out of the Irn Bru farce cup on Saturday after throwing away a lead against Alloa and losing on penalties.

The United fans reacted with a collective shrug of the shoulders.

We all know my thoughts on this shambles of a competition so let's leave that aside at the moment. The good news was that, amid all the young lads who got some game time, we were able to see the return of club captain and best player Fraser Fyvie for the last 15 minutes or so. This could not be more welcome as midfield is an area that we're really struggling to control. If we can get Fyvie fit then we have imo the best midfielder in the league back in our team.

Billy King also made a comeback from injury which is very welcome as well, although King is always a bit hit and miss. However, I like the idea of King and Aird in the team.

Elsewhere in this mickey mouse competition, Irish side Coleraine were able to scrape by Formartine on penalties (2-1 on pens), Sligo pumped Livi's colt team 4-1, Queens Park beat TNS on pens, Connah's Quay knocked out Ray McKinnon's Falkirk, Sutton United beat Airdrie, Bohemians beat Peterhead, East Fife beat Partick, Arbroath beat Annan, Montrose beat Dumbarton, Edinburgh City beat East Kilbride, St Mirren colts beat Accies colts, ICT thumped Raith, QOTS beat Crusaders (Dobbie on 20 goals for the season now), Dunfermline beat Boreham Wood and Motherwell colts beat Dundee colts. Nobody cared about any of these results.

Back to league business next week which I'm very much looking forward to. I'm not sure why since we're pash, but I am nonetheless.

Did Alloa cheat?!

I’ve heard a rumour they do it a lot.

Aye was only a young kid with us and dropped into a team that were woeful and a club in turmoil so not exactly helpful for him but he used to do my nut in with never having any end product.

So what you're saying is he doesn't thrive when he plays for a poor team and a club in turmoil?

Bodes well for us then

I liked the idea of the colt teams but the evidence has been shown that it does nothing. I don't think they should be afraid to withdraw the idea.

As NNH said the reserve league being back will help. I don't find it any coincidence that the last time we qualified for a world cup was when we still had a reserve league.

I know reserve players to WC is a huge step but it allowed our clubs to give a lot of game time to the young players coming through and start to be introduced to the first team. I was by and large Scottish boys getting crucial game time at a young age mixed in with senior players coming back from injury etc

Saturday will be the first match for me since the Dunfermline game at the start of August! Dunfermline, by the way, who played us off the park and have since been horses by every team they’ve played... Morton with a new manager and a point to prove, what could possibly go wrong!

Anyway, like Ivan I’m absolutely indifferent to the fact we’re out of that ridiculous cup competition. Nice to hear that Fyvie got a wee run out though.

Border

I'm still deeply, deeply concerned about our progress as a team. Last weekends disappointing draw away only highlights the fact that we will be capable of throwing away points on a regular basis. I can't see a Csaba team putting together a 10 match winning streak that we'll need to win this league.

The issue for me is that any time the team is wining they try to slow the game down to see it out. Unfortunately we’re hopeless at keeping clean sheets, I don’t uffderstand they don’t just keep pressing for more goals. Alloa ffs...

I think that's the way Csaba is wired. He apparently did that at Hearts too.

More often than not I just want to be entertained, and that means a cavalier attacking style. We've not had that for years, but when we did we got results.

Yeah it’s miserable to watch really.
