with most teams favouring 3 in the middle, you need 2 amazing box to box midfielders to not get over run

I would love to see it, but you need two top wingers to make it work. If you have them skinning the fullbacks you don't need to worry about being a man short in midfield, the oppo manager is telling his midfield to mark the wingers.

You are being old fashioned

These things go in cycles. Eventually 442 will be the go to formation again. However I don't see that being any time soon.

You need an incredibly good midfield to make it work.

4-4-2 or a variation of it (4-4-1-1, 4-4-2 diamond) isn’t THAT old fashioned tbh, both Real and Barca have won big trophies in the last couple of years playing the old 4-4-2, Atleti have played it for years, Leicester won the league with it, Portugal won the Euro’s with it.

It’s not old fashioned IMO, it’s just about having a coach who understands it, the personnel to play it, and players who understand their roles.

I wouldn’t mind a return to it but we’d likely need Fred and Herrera in the middle as Matic wouldn’t be able to cope and apparently the best CM in the world can’t play in a CM two...

No Pogba needs to be sold. There's no way we will keep him after all this nonsense. Both him and Jose have got to go.

I always thought 442 diamond MIGHT just work with Rashford and Martial up front. They’ve got pace and movement and the ability to get into wide areas. You’d obviously want your full backs to do some attacking as well because the midfield might be something like:

Matic
Fred Pogba
Lingard

We won’t be seeing it any time soon though.

Rest Lukaku and play either Rashford or Sanchez ip front.
