DUFC News - White Smoke Edition

The white smoke is bellowing over Tannadice, the new man has been named. Step forward Robbie Neilson, the new Dundee United Head Coach*.

Yep, former United player and Hearts and MK Dons manager Robbie Neilson has taken over the poisoned chalice that is the Dundee United managers post. I feel a bit like it's groundhog day. Once again I look at the appointment and nod my head, thinking this is the right appointment. Just as I did with Mixu (to an extent), I certainly did it with Ray and again I did it with Csaba. And I was wrong at every turn.

I hope Neilson can do (significantly) better than his predecessors. We need it quite desperately. His last stint in the Championship went superbly well, with Hearts running away with the league ahead of Hibs and Rangers. Obviously he was helped by having Craig Levein as his DoF at the time, and what we'd give to have Sir Craig back at the club too....

He does of course have the challenge of working with Laszlo's signings which is never easy, and I can't see their being much money for January signings. He needs to show his coaching mettle and get these players organised into a shape and system that gets the best out of them. Safranko and Clark could and should be a good partnership up front and I hope we go with two up top.

I'm not going to pretend I'm hugely enthusiastic - my malaise towards United is quite significant these days - but I'm hoping that Neilson can help inject some enthusiasm back into the club.

Mon the Terrors

*note: this doesn't mean that he coaches people to give head

Ivan is from Dundee. The harsh reality that it can always get worse is drilled into him.

We have to be happy with this appointment.

Time for the fans to get behind the team and manager once again.

testicles looks rank but feel great

You make an interesting point.

But at what perspective do they look rank? While hanging loosely while you strut through the shower room, appendage swinging? Or looking up while you're restrained as someone, perhaps a larger gentlemen, slowly descends towards you, plums dangling, tormenting you as they edge closer to your mouth that is held agape, knowing that a teabagging is upon you, relentless, inescapable. And yet, and yet, you have that slight sensation of relief that it's not the hairy annus that will torment you instead.

100% agree.

I have to agree that if I was a Dundee United fan I would see this move as both sensible and a bit ambitious. Things that should get the support together with management that seemed to be lacking with Csaba

Unfortunately some in our support are too wrapped up in the blame game for our current ills and are too intent on pointing the finger at anyone and everyone - the current target is chairman Mike Martin, who is know doubt partially culpable for many of our troubles but some seem to have a particular vendetta against him. This stops them getting behind anything the club does, even the positive things, which is deeply frustrating.

It seems that a lot of the “I won’t set foot back in Tannadice until Thomson is gone” crowd have just changed the name to Martin. It’s sad, really. What the team needs is a crowd giving them full support. I know one leads to the other, but I feel that the support who are going could possibly try a bit harder, if you know what I mean!

border totally agree. I won't pretend I'm not guilty of it myself. I find myself going to the game, I sit and talk to my old man and then go home, and not really 'support' the team other than just being there. I think too many of us are like that.

As ever, these things are symbiotic and we need more from the team to get us off our bums but I do feel that we could all do a bit more to show the team we're behind them.

The problem of course is the negative ones in our support will label us 'happy clappers' and aren't happy unless everyone is booing everyone associated with the club at all times. I don't agree with applauding them off the park if they've been beaten at home by Ayr or whatever, but at least give them backing during the games.

Truthfully I’m bad for it, too. Go to the match with a really good mate and my old man. Mostly just now we sit and chat about sechs, drugs and sausage rolls. We’re kind of surrounded by guys who aren’t into trying to lift the team at any point during the match. It’s quite sad.
