Opened the door?

Did we mess up big time regarding not signing Daniel James? The Swansea lad is getting noticed more and more and he should have been ours. He scored on his first competitive start for Wales today. Have we opened the door to other sides who are willing to spend more and not take 31 days to fill out paperwork and agree a price? Or will we still land him in the summer?

While I agree with you, Sol, it appears we tried to renegotiate the payment terms on the last day which may have killed it.

That's absolutely not what happened. We agreed a deal. Swansea agreed to it. Swansea came back and wanted to increase the initial payment.

It's worth noting that initial payments and staggered transfer fee's are the norm nowadays and 100% upfront is very abnormal.

The weird thing in the situation with Swansea was that when they wanted to increase the proportion paid upfront Leeds actually agreed. That has been confirmed by many reputable sources. This was the stage at which radio silence began. To me personally, and this bit is complete opinion, it sounds like somebody at Swansea increased it in an attempt to make us back out.

The last thing Leeds did was agree to an adjustment Swansea asked for, if Swansea weren't happy with that Leeds were not aware but, and very importantly, the club said afterwards they were open to any negotiations Swansea wished to enter, they only needed to ask.

^^^what Pro says. For once Leeds weren't responsible for a deal going t|ts up.

It may not suit everyone's agenda (not aimed at you JLA), but that's what happened.

Thanks for that clarification Sol. I do Believe Swansea screwed us. I think they put up a few players and when enough had been picked up they pulled the plug.

Big clue as to who was at faul is that someone lost their job over it. I would be looking in that direction

I suspect price tag will be increasing on a weekly basis to reflect that as well. Don't think we'll seem him in a leeds shirt now.

I was reading about Leeds expressed interest in James over a month before deadline day but (and please correct me if I'm wrong on this) we only approached Swansea with about a week to go. I know leaving it late is gamesmanship and all part of the negotiation process – who blinks first etc – but it backfired and while we were 100% shafted by them, we'd left it too late to go in for anyone else. One of the the most crucial run-ins in our club's history and no contingency plan – unbelievable.

Nothing personal but your screen name brought back thoughts of having to read Peter’s articles after the fact how Bates had done everything he could but it was someone else’s fault!
