Importance of Top Four

Morning all,

No need to expand on what's already been said on here by you all on a fantastic match last night.

There have been multiple debates on here about whether continuing to hold our place in the top four or winning an FA/Carabao cup is most important. The two aren't mutually exclusive, i.e. why can't we win the Carabao cup and finish in the top four? But let's be realistic. We have an ultra thin squad as it is and there are five other top teams competing with us who can all spend exponentially more than us in all departments, so I'm talking about which we prioritise.

I've always been firmly in the camp of top four. Nights like last night, being in the semi finals of the Champions League (still feels unreal typing that) make those horrible, nail biting, poor quality end of season games that we had to go through last season so worth it. The games such as the laboured 2-0 and 1-0 wins over Watford and Newcastle, the 1-1 draw at Brighton. The none-memorable games which are just so, so important, because they got us over the line, and allowed the amazing experiences of getting out of a group with Barcelona and Inter Milan after a poor start, knocking out Dortmund comprehensively, knocking out Man City like we did last night. Now we find ourselves with a chance of being in the Champions League final, after not spending a single penny.

I do understand that this team needs to win a trophy. They are what's written in the history books and this group of players can never be called a 'great' team until they do. But can anyone seriously hand on heart say that winning the Carabao cup would give them the same feeling that we all had waking up this morning? Would it make the rest of Europe be looking at us in admiration? Look at the kudos our semi final opponents have got from all over Europe, we will be getting the same sorts of comments about us now, well and truly deserved.

So, anyone who said they would have taken 5th/6th this season if it meant a cup win - has last night changed your mind?

An Arsenal or Chelsea Europa League win might render 4th place irrelevant.
Top 3 is were it's at, and if you don't get that, you could be looking down the barrel of a Thursday night football in that lovely new stadium.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I stand to be corrected but I believe it's not impossible for us to finish 4th but not qualify for the CL. The only way that could have happened is if Arsenal/Chelsea won the Europa and finished 5th/6th AND Man Utd won the CL and finished 5th/6th.

The last time we won the league cup we went on a pretty poor run. Unfortunately being in the Champions league brings in the money and attracts better players
while winning a domestic up is great for the fans.
If Levy had a choice between Top 2 and winning the FA cup what would he choose?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I get your point Ace, but no point being in the CL if we are not going to go full tilt for it, now we have reached the semi-finals. Cannot see the point of keep qualifying, if we are just not going to try to win it.

The only clubs that could win the CL and finish outside the top four as it stands were Spurs and United. United are now out, so it makes no difference now, Spurs will either get CL next season through say 4th or winning the CL. Top Four will get CL place unless Spurs win it and finish outside the top four, and Chelsea/Arsenal win Europa league and also finish outside the top four.

Exactly, just because when we won the League Cup we went on a poor run doesn't mean this is the norm. We need silverware and the rest will happen. Levy said we will be one of Europe's top teams since we entered our new stadium and he's right, you know. Things have just been going in the exact opposite direction of us being "Spursy" since.

Hey... these could be once again our Glory Days coming up!! It's been a long time coming.

Oh right, sorry, but I thought if Spurs finish fourth, and Chelsea or Arsenal are outside the top 4, and win the Europa, then 4th place doesn't play in next year's CL.
